The Cabinet today approved the provision of gratuity for all pensioners including to those who retired before January 1, 2016, the Prime Minister's Media Division said.
Accordingly, the proposal made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to provide gratuity for 600,000 pensioners was approved today.
Earlier, the gratuities were paid only to government employees who retired after January 1,2016.
“The Prime Minister pointed out that there is an anomaly in paying gratuity since those who retired prior to 2016 did not receive gratuity. Accordingly, the Cabinet yesterday decided to remove the anomaly and provide gratuity to all retired employees," the Prime Minister's Media Division said.
It said the government has paid attention to enhance the current facilities being provided to pensioners. Dedicated wards are to be made at main government hospitals covering the country for treatment of government employees including those who had retired from service.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet has highlighted that many retired employees receive a salary less than Rs.20,000 and that this anomaly should be rectified by the National Salaries Commission. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
