Around 20,000 could lose their lives due to COVID virus in Sri Lanka by September this year, if the country fails to arrest the vast spread of the disease, former Minister Mangala Samaraweera quoted in a Washington-based university's research report today.
Mr. Samaraweera said in a statement that Sri Lanka should focus on this research report. The University of Washington had done an indepth study on the pandemic and had focused on entire globe. Therefore Sri Lanka should act fast and take steps to arrest the spread of the pandemic" he said.
"The report had taken US and UK as countries which had been able to control the disease successfully. Therefore Sri Lanka should take these countries as role models," he added.
Also he said Sri Lanka should see to it that 70% of its population should be vaccinated as soon as possible to avoid the disaster. "It is not too late for Sri Lanka to avoid the disaster if it acts swiftly," he quoting in the University of Washington report. (Yohan Perera)

Huh? The US has over 580,000 deaths and the UK has over 125,000 death. How the hell does this classify as "control the disease successfully"? New Zealand in contrast has only 25 deaths.

This guy worships the West and can not think on his own. In America and Britain hundreds were dying daily despite having so many doctors and hospitals, over half a million had died in America so far. In comparison Sri Lanka is doing much better and only now things are going bad because the government failed to cut off completely from India.

Both America and UK had two of the most stupid leaders known to makind and according to you have done well in the fight against covid...... this should be encouraging news for Sri Lankan leaders who literally glow in the dark.

According to our honorable ex minister who is US/UK biased (may be his ancesters originated from there) is saying that Sri Lanka should follow US and UK. Can you believe this? US still has a daily infection of over 40,000 cases . So, you can imagine if these guys were in power what could have been our numbers. Readers please go and check numbers before you blindly believe this guy who is all out to sell the country to US for nothing.

There is nothing to mone about the panadamic because , it is uncontrollable around the globe. Don't make it political.

You are no medial expert to give the number of people that needs to be vaccinated. You are repeating the "WHO and leading national health agencies such a NHS in UK figures" which is common knowledge now. I think it is time you withdraw from public life and concentrate on a nice hobby or past time.

We controlled it for sometime but now we are not in control. US and UK controlled it through vaccines. They kept all vaccines to themselves first and only now they are slowly giving to other countries. Only Australia, New Zealand have controlled it better. But they too have not received enough vaccines. Surprisingly, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Thaiwan, are having only very few infected people.
