Twenty three Sri Lankans who were working in Middle Eastern countries have succumbed to COVID-19 during past three months, Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) told the Daily Mirror today.
Country | Total COVID-19 deaths since March |
---|---|
UAE | 8 |
Kuwait | 7 |
Saudi Arabia | 6 |
Oman | 2 |
The highest number of deaths has been reported from United Arab Emirates (UAE) including 7 deaths from Dubai and 1 from Abu Dhabi. The remaining deaths have been reported from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman.
“We still don’t know how many housemaids were among them. The report we have now is not gender specified,” SLFEB Spokesman Mangala Randeniya said.
SLFEB said the final rites of all the 23 Sri Lankan migrant workers who died during past three months have been conducted in their respective host countries due to COVID-19 related health concerns. The family members of the deceased in Sri Lanka had given their consent, understanding the current situation, Randeniya said. (Piyumi Fonseka)

This government is trying to hold elections while our brothers and sisters die in foreign nations owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. People should now realise the real face of "Rajapakses". Imagine the fate of the country after elections.

These are probably all maids working in Arab houses. Lot of Arabs got infected with covid-19 and these maids would have been forced to look after the infected members of the families, and thus got infected themselves. All these maids are either Sinhalese, Muslims, or Estate Tamils.

Hey Sarath - you need not say whether the dead are muslims, tamils or sinhalese but Sri Lankans. It is strange why it took 3 months the news to get here through their agencies. I am sure the news reporter was coming to SL in a bicycle to SL. I hope there is some contact and help given to the domestics still in ME. How did the SL embassy miss the news. Are the embassies closed already.

Every Embassy is trying protect his/her butt and get out of the host countries. What information can you get from them? I was told that the embassy staff do not even visit the office and shut down in their living quarters. By the way, were the corpses burned or buried?
