Hot on the heels of the death of a rare black leopard in Nallathanniya, another leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), that was trapped in a snare at a private land in Neluwa, Galle was found dead today, Wildlife Conservation Department Director General M.G.C. Sooriyabandara said.

He told Daily Mirror that they would hope to take legal actions against the owner of the land as they suspected that the snare was set by the owner of the land.

”The leopard was first captured by a wildlife officer who subsequently informed the relevant officials,” Sooriyabandara said.

“The postmortem of the leopard is being carried out by the wildlife doctors,” Sooriyabandara added.

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka that was first described in 1956 by the Sri Lankan zoologist Deraniyagala.

The survival of the Sri Lankan leopard is threatened due to habitat loss and fragmentation primarily with some levels of direct poaching and direct and indirect human-leopard related leopard deaths.

Meanwhile, Sooriyabandara said another leopard, that was trapped in a snare was released after being rescued by the wildlife officers in Yatiyanthota three days ago.

“The leopard was released as there were no injuries at the time it was rescued,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

The land owner should be prosecuted . He is responsible for what goes on his land.. it was probably a snare set for wild boar.

Unless the authorities take extremely urgent action to dismantle ALL these Snare Traps, ban them and prosecute all those who have installed them, giving them hefty fines and jail terms, Sri Lankan Leopards and Black Panthers will soon become extinct. Will the people of Sri Lanka accept that?? Time for a good 'Hue and cry' about this too. MM

Which species is the wild life, and which species is the wilder life. Now, from the elephant to the , much rarer, leopard. The rape of the jungle is going on unabated, and, will only cease when there is nothing remaining, and that includes humans on this land.

It will be a protest if Rosy is behind the killing of wild animals. Everything has a political motivation in South Asia. Welcome to the South Asian democracy, it is the place for breeding foolish citizens and leaders.

This is very sad and disgusting. However never thought they roam around in Galle area. Soon there will only be disgusting humans encroaching all land and no animals in this diverse country.

Too many leopards. Need to have a hunting session to reduce their numbers by half.
