Three suspects were arrested with at least 600 letters containing defamatory remarks against the President at the Central Mail Exchange (CME) in Pettah, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

He said the suspects were taken into custody by the Fort Police along with letters containing defamatory remarks against the President that incited ethnic hatred.

The suspects, K. Sampath Kumara (28), W. M. Dhanusha Priyadarshana (41) and P. Kavindu Thakshila Weerasena (24) were identified as residents of Waththegama, Alawwa and Polgolla respectively.

It was reported that officials of the Mail Exchange opened several letters that had arrived after becoming suspicious about their contents and discovered that they contained defamatory remarks against the President.

It was reported that the arrested suspects were staff members of a powerful minister. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

The letter image is being circulated in the social media. What was meant for 600 recipients has gone to millions. Getting caught could be a strategy.

If you can give names of the suspects, what's keeping you from providing the name of this so called powerful minister who in my personal opinion can be likened to dog shit if he is resorting to such low down tactics.

postal workers have no right to pry into letters in the post under whatever excuses. it is a violation of the citizen's right to privacy. however this cannot suppress the people's indignation against the president.
