The university student who attempted to commit suicide and was rescued by a policeman and an army officer on duty in Bambalapitiya yesterday had escaped from the Kalubowila hospital during visiting hours last evening, the Director of the Hospital, Dr. Anil Jayasinghe told Daily Mirror online

The student who was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital after she was rescued had been treated by the hospital staff and was out of danger Dr. Jayasinghe said.

He further added that a person who had allegedly been her mother had helped her escape from the hospital and it was not in the best interest of the patient. should punish her

    Shovini Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:49 PM

Shame on the hospital. What were they doing???

Premalal Perera Tuesday, 20 July 2010 01:37 PM

Mother loves her, she wants her.

Kirthi hewamanne Tuesday, 20 July 2010 01:22 PM

Nissanka, I agree with you .All those who make cruel comments are insensitive People with out an atom of brains.
    This a serious issue
    Please don't display your ignorrance.

Jaminda Mendis Tuesday, 20 July 2010 12:11 PM

Another big joke in a government institution.

Krishani Fonseka Tuesday, 20 July 2010 11:32 AM

I feel really sorry for her, the hospital authorities should have had someone guarding her and after she had been declared physically fit sent her for counselling. One attempts suicude only when one is totally helpless and not knowing what to do in a situation which has risen to a climax, the victim cannot think straight but others can. Hope her mother can get her some help, otherwise another life is lost because someone was not there to give her a "caring listening ear" at a time of need.

    Dushantha Tuesday, 20 July 2010 11:01 AM

I wish and pray that God will save her from any future attempts. Thanks to the Officers who saved her. Talking in a big way to say that she has commited an offence and punishing her is rubbish. Only the one who undergoes a mental anguish can realize the situation. Better be with her and try to get better by way of councilling.

    NISSANKA Tuesday, 20 July 2010 10:45 AM

Some of the comments are so cruel. Obviously, she got a serious problem she cannot handle and may be she doesn't want to face her parents and friends etc. All those backyard psychiatrists should back off. Hey, everybody show some compassion for this poor lass. If you cannot help just don't make cruel statements. Please do not blame the victim.

    GK Tuesday, 20 July 2010 10:03 AM

She would have escaped for her own good. if she was in hospital she would have been charged and put in jail. That will not help any of her problems. Running away is best option she had I guess

    LouVi Tuesday, 20 July 2010 09:21 AM

Must be a Guiness Record ......... to escape from death and hospital on the same day.

    OscarWilde Tuesday, 20 July 2010 09:14 AM

Suicide is actually against the law and punishable under the Penal Code.

wasanthi Madurapperu Tuesday, 20 July 2010 08:53 AM

People have different problems. Most of them dont know how to tackle these problems. Thats why some choose comitted-suicide. Therefore, Proper councelling system is needed to the country. In Developed countries, there are councelling unit in most of the medical centres. In our country, there is no such an opportunity for the people those who suffer from

Proud to be a sri lankan

    paapi Tuesday, 20 July 2010 08:28 AM

Maybe, like Wimal, she was also fed up with life because of Ban Ki Moon

    S. Jayardene Tuesday, 20 July 2010 08:07 AM

It is a mental condition. Unless she has a good will power she will not change.

    Pubilis Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:29 AM

Probably because of the unwanted publicity, though the mother is not really helping her.

Tharaka Chanaka Tuesday, 20 July 2010 07:09 AM

who cares, the credit goes to the soldier and policeman who saved her...

    suwimal Tuesday, 20 July 2010 07:02 AM

attempted suicide is an appeal against the whole world. It is the duty of any body and every body to help this person.

    Concerned Tuesday, 20 July 2010 06:36 AM

She was not an ordinary patient, but someone who tried to commit suicide which is against the law. How come such a patient was kept in the hospital without any Police protection? Has that endangered her life further?

    invictusrilankan Tuesday, 20 July 2010 06:29 AM

I think 'SpaceCab' is next in line. The best way to escape from problems is NOT to kill your self. You have been blessed to be born in human form and there is so much we can do as Human beings. Unless you do it save someone else's life or the betterment of humanity there is no other justifiable reason to take your own life. There are people / organizations and other support systems that can help you deal with your problems. SRI LANKA SUMITHRAYO is one such organization. The public need to be educated on these things. AWARENESS is the KEY here.

    SpaceCab Tuesday, 20 July 2010 06:19 AM

What's the biggy??? she will be born again right??? best way to escape from problems.

Kirthi hewamanne Tuesday, 20 July 2010 06:10 AM

Dr. Jayan Mendis Is an extra ordinary person and an authority on this subject. He will make a great contribution to improve the current serious situation if the govt. and the health Dept. can enlist his assistance with necessary funnds
and facilities. He will treat patients with respect and dignity

NO body is 100% mentally perfect.!!!!

    desa Tuesday, 20 July 2010 06:00 AM

very true. If only she was offered some counselling while at the hospital, perhaps it would've stopped her from making a another attempt.

    RajasH Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:52 AM

"Allegedly her mother." is in the manner of speaking and not necessarily statement of fact.

Gayan Samarasekara Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:46 AM

Attempted suicide. is not as simple as a mentally disordered action. She is a university student, for which ample mental stability and commitment needed. Some problem had led her try to kill herself. She has to be given proper medical counseling and she will someday return to the society as a worthy lady.

Simple Sydney Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:37 AM

Allegedly her mother. Don't hospital authorities check IDs before they let in visitors in situations like this

Gayan Samarasekara Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:36 AM

Sri Lanka is one of the countries reporting the highest number of annual suicide cases in the world. This is a severe social problem but unfortunately the government attention is minimal. Please give it a priority, and address this sensitive issue intellectually, rather than fining etc those who tried to kill themselves. The mentality of such people must be strengthened and proper counseling program is a must. Present counseling organizations lack a trained staff, therefore they have to be standardized, while expanding.

    Dheen Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:33 AM

She is definitely a mental patient and she along with her mother who is instrumental in her bid to escape should be sent to the mental hospital for treatment.

    boold Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:31 AM

may be a love failure or something else?
