The police force is not corrupt and if so then it should be proven with evidence instead of just making statements, Deputy Inspector General (IGP) Administration of police N.K Illangakoon told reporters this evening when asked to respond to statements that the police was among the most corrupt institutions in the country.
Sports Minister C.B Ratnayaka had said this week that Sri Lanka cricket administration together with the police and education departments were the most corrupt institutions in the country.
However DIG Illangakoon said one cannot make statements without backing it with evidence and added that if there are complains of corruption against the police then it should be taken up with the Bribery Commission and the police hierarchy will act on such complains. (Daily Mirror online)

Politicos too, say the same!

Phew!!! All this time I thought we had a one of the world's most corrupt police forces. Now that it is cleared maybe I can sleep peacefully at night knowing our high integrity law enforcement officers who do not accept a penny above their meager monthly salary are bravely patrolling the nights without fear or favor

nothing to stop the police or the cricket board from suing the minister for defamation is there ?

Don't talk nonsense. We all know about police.

What do you when 99% of the eggs are rotten? Obviously throw them all away and get new ones. The problem is finding goods eggs in Sri Lanka to replace is an uphill task as it is rare to find honest and exemplary citizens with the right conscience living in this land anymore.

If the police is not weeding off the rotten eggs, then they are corrupt of course
Thursday, 03 June 2010 05:27 AM
Well said

Our police forces need a thorough training specially by a Western Country. In Sri-Lanka, no decent people ever want to go to police even in an unavoidable circumstance.
Thursday, 03 June 2010 05:18 AM
Phew! then it is confirmed
Thursday, 03 June 2010 05:11 AM
In what way are they efficient?

In most instances, the general public is scared to report corrupt practices by police personnel due to fear of reprisal. Whether it be a minor traffic offence or one of the most heinous crimes, there is always a way out if you are willing to look after the inerests of the police officers concerned. Admit it and take corrective action if you want to safeguard the reputation of the police or whatever is left of it

This is the official response to the Minister's comment. Don't take serious.
Thursday, 03 June 2010 04:04 AM
What? Why Not. Evidence always are there.
Thursday, 03 June 2010 12:13 AM
Yeah, right ... as if the 'cops' are going to admit that they are 'robbers'?
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 06:30 PM
Everyone knows about the police and its discipline!
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 11:54 PM
I agree with what Minister Ratnayake said but, I also must admit that not every police officer is corrupt. There are 'rotten-eggs' in the basket and they should be weeded-out gradually!
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 11:17 PM
The biggest joke of the millennium!
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 10:41 PM
'Bribery Commission'? Oh, the one which has only got the signboards?
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 09:57 PM
Many 'suspects' have died in police custody! They are the worst organization in Sri Lanka!
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 09:45 PM
What a lie!
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 09:45 PM
The Sri Lanka Police is an efficient institution - but it should be upgraded using modern technology.

This came from the 'horse's mouth itself.'
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 08:12 PM
The Bribery Commission has just been a 'placeholder,' for all this time. Its investigative units are not powerful enough to instill any 'fear of punishment.'
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 07:16 PM
The Police not corrupt? Hi .. hi .. hi .. ho .. ho .. hoooo! Laugh of the century!
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 07:15 PM
The Indian Police are much better, I suppose.
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 07:10 PM
Look who's talking! Ha! ha!
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 07:04 PM
Wonder whether there IS any Commission called the 'Bribery Commission'? It ceased to exist because of the inoperative Constitutional Council under the 17th Amendment.
