Police have begun investigations into the death of a mother from Kandy who is said to have undergone an illegal abortion resulting in severe internal bleeding. She died after being admitted to the Kandy General Hospital in serious condition.
After undergoing an abortion at an illegal abortion clinic, the victim was admitted to hospital with severe internal bleeding, police said.
Although the patient had been warded after the abortion she had sought treatment for high fever at a general ward till she was transferred to the maternity ward where she died.

The problem is there are plenty of abortion Clinics in the country operated illigally by ducks.
Govt should put a stop for it
Second Govt should put a time limit on how many weeks a abortions could be carried out.Maximum time limit of the Foetus can be held.
3rd
Harsh penalty should be implemented for docs who disoby the rule

Dear abortion vs anti-abortion debaters: Please, while you are at it, how about also talking of catching the quack who caused this death? And about the father of the child?? And the middle man who referred them to the quack?? and so on ...

That's why contraceptives are available. As I see, almost all of the un-wanted pregnancies can be prevented using existing contraceptives. They are readily available in SL also - but people are not educated enough or willing enough to use them.
@Gayan Samarasekara: can you pls give an example where "a birth may badly affect the mother as well as the child in future" and which could not have been prevented using existing contraceptives or common sense of the lady involved ?

Humans are not mechanical objects to be meddled with; every action will have consequences, which will lead to life long misery to one's self and others. You can kill the unborn, but not guilt that follows.

All those want to promote the legalization of abortion, think about this, what if your mum or dad thought of aborting you citing economic problems, social pressure, or hardship or education or any other justifiable reason acceptable to the majority of logical thinkers? It would have been better if that had happened, instead of bringing into this world an inconsiderate being such as you for being someone promoting the destruction of life.

Abortion is murder. Murder of an innocent child who could not even raise a cry against that injustice. Those who do it, will have to face its dire consequence at some point in their life. Irresponsible sexual behaviour of its parents is not a reason to deprive the child of the right to live.

it's time to legalise abortion. There are 365,000 abortions happening every year in Sri Lanka. That's putting the lives of 365,000 Sri Lankan women at risk every year when carrying out illegal abortions! Of course, for Sri Lanka's 96% male parliament, the lives of the women may not be that important! But women make over 52% of our population and before thinking of protecting an unborn foetus, we should think about protecting the mother first! It is not the duty of a man or any one else to tell a woman what she should do with her body or what's growing inside it. If the mother doesn't want the foetus inside her body, it is her decision to terminate or not. After all - it's not us having to carry it for 9 months and then look after it!
Gayan Samarasekara Thursday, 29 July 2010 07:31 AM
Abortion must be legalized (subject to conditions). A proper abortion would have saved the mum's life. Abortion is illegal just in name in Sri Lanka and taking place very widely. Unsecured abortion potentially kills two lives, whereas making it legal will secure one life.
Gayan Samarasekara Thursday, 29 July 2010 08:40 AM
True. But support to abortion legalizing shouldn't mean that all the pregnant ladies are forced to do so. Parents always love to have children. On the other hand, there may be inevitable social situations where some unnecessary birth may badly affect the mother as well as the child in future. Some slogans hide the intellectual logic.

Man can carry the condom and the woman can carry the pill in order to be extra careful
Marl Thursday, 29 July 2010 08:13 AM
There are so many varieties of contraceptives widely available in Sri Lanka. Why can’t anyone use them if they don’t want to get pregnant. An unborn child should not pay the ultimate penalty for the parents negligence.
Nihal Fernando Thursday, 29 July 2010 08:12 AM
Why wait until the woman conceives and later kills a fetus. Why not use condom? This is all due due to concupiscence or strong sexual desire, lust.

This is such a sad story. I agree with Gayan as well. And anyone who says it's against our culture should check their history first. Abortion has been practiced even by vedamahaththayas since ancient times using branches of various trees. The current abortion laws won't even protect a mother who might lose her life during an emergency labour. We must decriminalise this and have proper health and safety guidelines.
sltk2004 Thursday, 29 July 2010 08:10 AM
I am not commenting whether abortion is right or wrong. But I just want to remind of an anti-abortion slogan I saw in a news article or TV some years back:
"ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO LEGALIZE ABORTION ARE ALREADY BORN"
Angel Thursday, 29 July 2010 08:07 AM
Abortions should be carried out only when the Mothers life is in danger! To Avoid unaccepted pregnancies general public should be given proper education with regard to the Contraception! If so we would have save this innocence life. May her soul rest in peace.
jolenedel Thursday, 29 July 2010 08:04 AM
I also think abortion should be legalised and should be a minimum permitted age for that. and if girls under the minimum restricted age needs an abortion they should do it through a legal process. we need to allow this same time with a mechanism to prevent the encouragement from this for younger people to have sex or losing the fear for having underage sex.
Bakamoona Thursday, 29 July 2010 07:58 AM
100% agree with Gayan. Majority of married couples do abort their fetus due to financial difficulties. Abortions will increase in the future due to cost of living, education expenses, higher education, etc. etc. Unmarried girls and boys of course should not be naughty.
