Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said today his ministry had decided to impose a minimum age limit of 35 on three-wheeler drivers when issuing driving licenses for passenger transport.

He said there were about 1.2 million three-wheelers in the country and new rules and regulations would be introduced regarding the transportation of passengers in them.

The minister said passenger transportation in three-wheelers began at the end of the 1980s and there were no laws to regulate the service.

He said under the Motor Traffic Act, the licenses obtained by three-wheel drivers earlier would not be cancelled.

“Those who obtain new three-wheeler driving licenses for passenger transport should undergo several examinations and should be 35 or above. Those under the age of 35 would be eligible for three-wheeler driving licenses only for home use. When issuing a license, the ministry would to check the applicant whether he or she was involved in any criminal activities," the minister said

He said applicants should undergo a two-week training session as recommended by the Commission of the Motor Traffic Department. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Well done Minister.Get rid of the 3 wheelers and give the owners a concessionary loan to buy small cars.

    Traveller Thursday, 16 August 2018 10:34 PM

The three wheel vehicles are a symbol of a poor country with no industries or any other positive markers. This rotten technology from India is also contributing as an easy and affordable transport for contract killers and drug smugglers. The Minister should have the courage to phase out this garbage from the Sri Lankan streets gradually within the next five years. Sri Lankan masses are more concerned about cricket than the image of the country.

THIS IS A DISCOURAGEMENT FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS. THEY CAN LAY DOWN A BASIS TO ISSUE THE LICENSES AFTER THEY GO THOROUGH TRAINING AND RIGOROUS TESTS ETC

Be realistic Thursday, 16 August 2018 11:00 PM

Number of three wheeler licenses issued must be controlled, but there should not be an age limit. If not age limit could be set at probably 21 not 35. 35 is too old.

Please, make the country free from Three-Wheel culture that damned our decent society.

Jungle law again by the buffoons elected by people. There are doctors and much more competent professionals that do an excellent job at 25 yrs or under. Even a school kids will be more competent than most of the Srilankan parliamentarians. As usual no logic or reason, just a random number of 35

    At last!!

Apply the same rules for Bus Drivers as well, and some of them have turned out to be drug addicts and should taken out from our Roads.

    Lokka Friday, 17 August 2018 03:01 AM

Very good move. But will it be ever implemented? The BIG question is that.

The realist Friday, 17 August 2018 04:42 AM

Why impose an age limit? There is a sizeable number of youth and young adults, those in the 20-35 bracket, who make a living out of trishaw hires. Bring in regulations and make sure that all three-wheel drivers are legitimate for sure - rollout awareness-raising programs and impose strict control to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians. If indeed this age limit is imposed, the government should ensure alternative livelihoods and solutions are provided to them to avoid another social issue.

    Daya Friday, 17 August 2018 05:01 AM

Irregularities!!!. Legal age is 18 yrs for driving license. But minister barring the person to practice a job of his choice without providing alternate solution for a private business. There is no requirement for criminal check for any government jobs including MPs. Rather than bus drivers Three-wheeler drivers treated like criminal too offensive.

That's not right!!! This could violate fundamental rights!!?? Three-wheelers not heavy vehicles nor it could speed!! Having rigorous training to obtain a license is good and make it mandatory!!! And should make it compulsory to renew training every 3 years !!?? My suggestion would be minimum age to be set at 25 !!!??

    lion Friday, 17 August 2018 05:28 AM

In Srilanka most of the laws enacted are in the book and not in the practice. This is the sad reality of this country.

Scirocco TS Friday, 17 August 2018 05:36 AM

Very good decision Minister. Keep it up!!

    Raj Friday, 17 August 2018 05:43 AM

Only talking never happens. Sri Lankan style

    Just a thought... Friday, 17 August 2018 03:04 PM

What is required on our roads is a points based demerit system. After you lose all your points you lose your 3 wheeler pasenger licence permanently.

    Hilarious Friday, 17 August 2018 04:00 PM

Just think.. if only you cannot enter parliament until you are over 45, you have to leave by 65 and also until you have got at least a Degree. Imagine the problems this will cause.

    DG Friday, 17 August 2018 04:22 PM

1.2 million trishaws are in operation and the issued licences of under 35 yrs must be a huge number and will this age limit will have any effect. Unless issued ones are also reviewed this age limit will be of little effect.

    Waco Friday, 17 August 2018 04:34 PM

Minimum age to become a Minister should be 60 years.

    REEZ Friday, 17 August 2018 05:04 PM

Good move that checking criminal records. Check the criminal records of politician also before handing over the nomination.

    johnsiva Friday, 17 August 2018 06:35 PM

This is being done to target the tea estate community. Many young adults saw their parent suffer under brutal working conditions for very poor salary. Thats how the tea industry is setup. So these youth take to driving tuk tuks which better for less pain and struggle. But it also means the Tea industry is in big danger due to a labour shortage. Nobody wants to do the back breaking estate work for only a few hundred rupees a day
