Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe acceded to a request made by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to change the name of the Northern Province Development Ministry (NPDM) to reflect the Eastern Province as well, Jaffna District TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran said yesterday.
He said the TNA had complained about the elected representatives of the Northern and Eastern Provinces prior to taking Cabinet decisions on the development of their areas and that the Prime Minister agreed to setting up a mechanism for consultations.
The MP said the government had set up the Northern Province Development Ministry, but its name should be changed to reflect the Eastern Province because there are Tamil areas in the East as well.
He said there was no time frame nor a new name-change suggested. (Kelum Bandara)

I beg to ask whether other provinces are that far developed and does not demand a special ministry ! - Politics all the way to garner votes ! !

"because there are Tamil areas in the East as well." then what about the Sinhalese and Muslims in these areas?
AK Friday, 18 January 2019 11:06 AM
Tamils are favored by the west just like how Israelis were favored by the West. Dont be jealous.
mnsmart Friday, 18 January 2019 08:09 AM
So the ministry overlooks Muslims and sinhalese in these areas?
sundar Friday, 18 January 2019 08:37 AM
the ministry overlooks development of the region, including the east and not specifically the Muslims or Sinhalese.

Prelude to a merger? There are Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims all over the country. So are they to be given special stats? If this is not racism by the Tamils, who never apologised for the atrocities they created, and grabbing at the expense of othe communities what is it? And what right has the Prime Minister to make such unilateral decisions. Hpw can we have trust in the Tamils or the government?

Unless respective, eligible, efficient, educated, qualified people are appointed to do the right job at the right places for the sake of the country without seeing to caste or creed, have the this country shall have this ego problem and never have the opportunity to develop this country. Main agenda here is nothing than dirty politics.

East suffered as north during the crisis eras that is not completely vanished from the minds of citizens,. the younger citizens of the land are to see what happened before they are born. The very old still talking of chola invasion.

PM has to agree since he doesn't have a 50% majority in the parliament. This is why Sumanthiran is hell bent on removing the executive presidency

Unfortunately the war was only fought in the North and East that has caused a huge destruction. Since the end of the war in 2009 (10 years), somehow the area except the ones belongs to Tamil's have developed very well (see Katankudy). The Hindu temples have been razed down to build fish market (insult to the other community). Wouldn't be a good idea to develop these area to create some job opportunities to the single parents who lost their husbands upon surrendering and some were killed in the shelling. Unknown amount of Tamils were killed, do you realize?I do really appreciate the kindness of Sinhalese through their action of helping those in the east every time there was a natural disaster. I witnessed myself following the Tsunami."Bridge the GAP"
