The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said it was only in consultation with the party that the Cabinet could take a decision on the development of the post-war areas in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

TNA MP Mavai Senadhirajah told a public rally in Jaffna on Monday that they had discussed this matter with the government and had appointed a 10-member committee for this purpose.

Meanwhile, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran said the Ministry of Northern Province Development would be soon renamed as the Northern and Eastern Provinces’ Development Ministry.

He said the TNA was accused of backing a confidence motion on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“We did it for a valid reason when there was political instability in the country. We discussed several matters before pledging to back the Prime Minister. One thing was the experts report on constitutional-making and the other was the development of our region.  We said a higher level management was required to develop the North and East in a systematic matter. Therefore, the Northern Province Development Ministry will become Northern and Eastern Provinces’ Development Ministry. This is also why the Northern Province Development Ministry is currently under the purview of the Prime Minister,” he said. (Romesh Madushanka)

Mr.Mavai and Mr.Sampanthan, why are you still in politics? You should retire from politics and let the young generation who much more modern lead the politics.

Northern Province Council rename to be Northern Eastern Development Council is the first step to merge North and East. Should the government get permission from the New Development Council to carry out development projects in North or East. Cat is out of the bag, why no confidence motion was not supported by TNA. Was there a secret deal between Prime minister and TNA to give unofficial self government to North and East with both provinces merged together. Eelam is given on a silver platter.

No way. This is sri lanka not tamil nadu. What these guys know about development. Govt should focus on people and develop the area. Can get ideas, but not let them run the show.

Development of any part of the country is a national issue than regional issue. For that matter Govt should not depend upon any individual party. Also if a region left for development based on ethnic, religion or political reasons then very soon country has to address the economic burden from the poverty stricken region depend on grants and social

Time the TNA united with other parties to develop the North and East. Nothing can be achieved independently. Same goes for other parts of the country as well.

    Amara Thursday, 17 January 2019 07:30 AM

Perfectly fine for the Northern province. They control the vast majority, but no chance in hell with Eastern province. Like it or not SL Tamil population in the East is at most 40 percent. Be very careful UNP you are going down a dangerous road.

It should be consulted with provincial council since they are the one locally representing their people. Are you asking this only for N/E or other provinces? If it is, it should be applicable to every provinces. Otherwise, let the government to consult provincial council.
