Expanding private schools: Bandula tells Prez to suspend cabinet paper

12 February 2019 04:14 pm - 30     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Former education minister Bandula Gunawardane today urged President Maithripala Sirisena to suspend the cabinet paper allowing private schools to expand its network by setting up more branches.

The cabinet paper, submitted by Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, states that there are 80 government approved private schools under the purview of the ,inistry and that in the event an approved private school seeks permission to expand branches, it could set up a maximum of five branches.

It states that this move will help ease the demand for government schools and the prevailing congestion in such schools.

MP Bandula Gunawardana told a news conference that if one private school was each allowed to set up five branches, there would be 400 private schools across the country.

“This is a betrayal of those who can’t afford to send their children to private schools and a move to privatise free education. We condemn this move and urge the President to suspend this cabinet paper,” he said.

He said none of the 80 private schools are monitored by the Education Ministry.

“These private schools take no notice of the Education Ministry. Once, there was an alleged LTTE fund related incident at a private school in Kandy.

We couldn’t even send ministry officials to that school to probe the incident as the school refused them entry. I invite the Minister for a public debate with regard to this cabinet paper,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

    Dude if people could afford to send their kids to those private schools what's wrong with that? I myself went to a state school and I'm grateful for free education. But seriously let people live the lives they want!

    Firstly - take a census of those attending private tution. If the census reveals that a large percentage are those attending govt schools - then rectify the situation by improving the teaching standards. May be the next time our genius will target private hospitals.

    What a joke this is! Bandula can make money having private tuition classes, but cannot have private schools. The real reason is, when private schools are established those student may not need private tuition hence this joker will not make money.

    Those who attend private schools generally do not need private tuition as the quality of education is good. May be the ex tuition teacher wants to protect the income of others of his kind.

    If Bandula is against opening of new semi government schools where does he expect the children who are refused admission to government schools go?

    This man sent his children overseas for studies and try to prevent others from getting an education. If more private schools are opened, less privileged children have more opportunities to get into a government school.

    If parents cant find better govt.schools i don't see anything wrong with going to private responsible schools, which can give better education but government should monitor them closely, most schools,hire under qualified teachers, they paid poorly,they are not allow even short leave or no leave at all,

    Why are you so jealous of students going to private schools? Is it because the private school students are more fluent in English than you and want to keep them to your standards being a former Education Minister?
