Dr Lasantha Malavige, a visiting academic at the Oxford University has been appointed as the next President of the South Asian Society of Sexual Medicine for a term of two years commencing 2017. The largest international conclave for experts in the field of Sexual Medicine will also be held in Sri Lanka in November next year under his Presidency.
An MBBS graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Dr Malavige has been trained in both physical and psychosexual management of sexual problems in Oxford and London. He has also worked as a clinical research fellow at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, University of Oxford.
He holds a Ph.D in Sexual Medicine and has followed specialist training programs at the European Academy of Sexual Medicine and psychosexual medicine training from the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine, London. He was recognised by the Sri Lanka Medical Council as a consultant in Sexual Medicine in 2011.
“As a past member of the Public Policy Committee of the International Society of Sexual Medicine and a Director for Journal of Sexual Medicine, I am happy to have been chosen as the President Elect for the South Asian Society of Sexual Medicine,” he said. “This is an honour not only for myself but also for Sri Lanka. I believe I will be able to make a significant contribution to improve sexual health in Sri Lankan and more than a quarter of the world’s population covered by our Society.” Dr. Malavige’s research interests include diabetes-related sexual problems, erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.
He has authored more than 15 research publications and invited speaker at more than 20 international forums. He is the recipient of the “Ten Outstanding Young Personalities” (TOYP) award for medical innovation which he received in 2011.
A visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo and the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, he was instrumental in introducing sexual medicine to Sri Lanka and also served as the Honorary Secretary and Vice President of Sri Lanka Medical Association in 2012 and 2014.
Currently the Vice-President of the Colombo Medical Faculty Alumni Association, he is also the Founder and the Chairman of Lassana Flora, Sri Lanka’s leading floral solutions provider.
