Editorial - Screaming through an Indian loudspeaker

A A A

As much as one cannot forget India’s stony stance at the UNHRC sessions in March this year, in view of the upcoming sessions in November, the importance of being in the Big Brother’s good books cannot be left aside easily. Be it the enormity of the territory or the unmatchable political power that has brought the other South Asian states to their knees, India’s word count—in the region and outside of it.

Perhaps, it is the sole reason why members of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) make frequent trips to India, meet many government high heads and urge them to make Sri Lanka fall in line. According to reports released on Friday, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has told the visiting TNA delegation that India would not backtrack from its position that Tamils in Sri Lanka should lead a life of dignity and self-respect in a peaceful environment.
We as a close neighbour understand India’s concern; perhaps, we even appreciate its empathy for thinking about us when its enormous piece of land is sufficiently infested with troubles, complex enough to keep its government awake for the next hundred years. Perhaps the best way India can express its love is through a constant crackdown on the pro-LTTE activities in its southern states; even if it means muzzling the speakers of the Tiger-word such as Karunanidhi.

On the other hand, the TNA has always been known for globetrotting; taking with it an ugly image of post- war Sri Lanka. Likewise, in  its tour to India, during  separate meetings with Dr. Singh and External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, Mr. Sampanthan said the TNA would consider joining the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on finding a political solution provided the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government gave a firm assurance that the Tamils would not be ‘cheated again’. The report said the TNA had told the Indian Prime Minister that the party would want an assurance from the Sri Lankan Government that the “negativity” would be removed.

No doubt, after the annihilation of the LTTE, the destitute Tamils in the North turned to the TNA for solace. They believe them to be their sole representative - a tagline forcibly put on the terror outfit by its leadership that later fell onto the TNA almost involuntarily. The election results speak volumes of its loyalty, which at the same time send out a clear signal that the government has failed to win the hearts of the people in the North despite their infrastructure and livelihood development attempts. Hence, the government cannot rightfully rejoice over the war victory when one end of the country is still in the dark.
Political betrayals are not mere column material when there are hundreds of people anticipating sustainable harmony. Hence, it is about deciding whether we are marching towards another horrendous war. It is sitting down and arriving at a consensus that is required; not screaming through an Indian loudspeaker.

I wonder if Colombo could have won the war without Indian help and if it could keep its victory, again, without Indian help.
