The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau has taken steps to issue permits for sand transportation once again from today (16). The issuing of permits to transport sand and earth was suspended subsequent to the commencement of the new government under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. A spokesman of the Bureau said that there had been numerous complaints regarding unregulated excavation of sand and destruction of river banks by unscrupulous individuals, though the programme was launched to control the difficulties faced by the people due to the rapid increase the price of sand.
Again steps have to be taken to issue sand permits to avoid this difficulty. He further said that the steps would be taken to prevent individuals from earning money unfairly by transporting sand and earth.
