Former Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President Upul Jayasuriya on behalf of United Lawyers Association urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to step down from the United National Party (UNP) leadership and make way for a new leader.
Addressing a news briefing yesterday, he stressed that the UNP is one of the mainstream democratic parties was heading towards disintegration.
“Although the UNP has had illustrious leaders since the independence era, the present leader, who has led the party for nearly quarter a century, had led it to the ground,” Jayasuriya said.
He said the UNP, which had a glorified history had faced with consecutive election defeats subsequent to the take over of the party by Mr Wickremesinghe.
“Hence, there should be a change in the leadership prior to the announcement of the UNP presidential candidate,” Jayasuriya added.
He proceeded to say that Mr Wickremesinghe could not jell and work hand in hand with President Maithripala Sirisena, who was a simple person.
“If Premier Wickremesinghe continues to be the UNP leader, the ruination of the UNP is inevitable,” Jayasuriya opined.
“Thus, we reiterate that Mr Wickremesinghe should respectively relinquish as the UNP leader and make way for a second run of the UNP to take over the way forward,” he added.
Meanwhile, responding to the remarks made by UNP Legal Secretary Nissanka Nanayakkara that the candidate for the presidential election could be named only after the Election Commission notifys the date to accept nominations for the election, Jayasuriya said it was a baseless statement which contained absolutely no truth. Some because of their profession, they think they know everything. They have only paper qualifications, not brains.

Ranil was excellent when he went behind Ranil and got the BOI chairman post. Now suddenly Ranil has become a failure because Ranil replaced him.

You say UNP had a glorified history but if you look at the country s' economic condition after ruling by them and SLFP for 71 years ,it has became a poorest country in the world.

UNPers have all sort of reason to avoid truth. They think others are nuts who know nothing. They are the biggest political liers in the world and undemocratic by delaying the elections by giving false reasons.

He won't go. He is a bloody leech. To become the next opposition leader and enjoy all the perks and benefits he is presently enjoying is his ulterior motive and to hell with the country.

Ranil comes from a good Buddhist Sinhalese family which is consistent with what the traditional UNP leadership is, however he is born with zero emotional intelligence which means he can’t have intuition, instinct or empathy. With this inherent reality he should have never got into politics in the first place.

UNP doesn’t have a glorious history as many goes on boasting. From JR’s era it has only damaged the country. First by open economy with no control destroyed the economic and cultural national values. Planted terrorism and let it grow. Killed thousands of youths due to stupid group of JVP. And then again from 2015 it spoiled all what has brought up by previous government including national security and economy.
