In response to concerns raised about the possible outbreak of Swine flu, the Chinese embassy said the authorities and experts in China will enhance monitoring, issue warnings in a timely manner and properly handle the situation. Earlier, Chief Epidemiologist of the Epidemiology Unit Dr. Sudath Samaraweera asked people to be alert on a new type of swine flu spreading in China, with potential to develop into a future pandemic.
However, a Chinese Embassy spokesman said the embassy noticed that there was concern about the African swine flu which might be transmitted to humans as reported. He said, according to the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), the virus named G4 in the relevant report is an H1N1 sub-type, which is a common cause of seasonal flu and swine flu.
