The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is to terminate the membership of a Pradeshiya Sabha member from the Moneragala District after he, along with five others was arrested over the alleged rape of a minor girl, the Daily Mirror learns.
The Pradeshiya Sabha member, R. A. Ranaweera, has been suspended from all party activities and Basil Rajapaksa has urged the authorities to conduct an impartial and speedy investigation.
SLPP MP, Namal Rajapaksa told the Daily Mirror that such acts should never be tolerated and will urge authorities to conduct a speedy and impartial investigation.
“There will be no political interference in this investigation or any other investigation for that matter. This incident is unacceptable and we hear that all suspects up to now have already been arrested,” Rajapaksa said.
The Daily Mirror learns that the alleged victim is a minor and all suspects have been taken into custody and remanded till April 16 after being produced in court.
