Kalido beach in Kalutara that had been damaged during floods and restored at a colossal expenditure of Rs.900 million was being eroded by the trembling waves lashing against the beach during the prevailing rough seas.
Former State Minister of Environment Jayantha Samaraweera yesterday visited the site with a team of officials and carried out an inspection. Residents of the area pointed out that the restoration project would result in a waste of funds.
Ven. Hettipola Seewali Thera who expressed concern about the failed project pointed out that the project should have been implemented in consultation with the traditional fisherfolk.
The former minister said that the project had been implemented under the supervision of a committee comprising the fisherfolk and the officials.
He said steps would be taken to erect breakwaters of 10 to 50 metres in length from the beach into the sea to prevent the force of the waves.
