Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that a decision had been taken not to select the top achievers in the country with regards to two major national examinations, the G.C.E. (O.L.) and the Year 5 Scholarship and instead a ruling on whether the student had failed or passed the examination would be given.
He further said that the list of “top ten” students would not be issued hereafter by the Department of Examinations. He explained that making such distinctions just put more pressure on students who should be free of such unnecessary pressure put on them by society.
The minister pointed out that developed countries do not put unnecessary pressure on their students to succeed in examinations and this enables students to study for their examinations in a more relaxed manner.
