A heat advisory had been issued by the Department of Meteorology yesterday for the Northern, North-Central and Eastern Provinces and the Puttalam District today (7).
According to the heat index issued by the department, the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Ampara have been mentioned as those where residents should practise extreme caution.
The department warned that those living in these areas should avoid venturing outside too much in the next few days, particularly in the morning hours as heat strokes, cramps and heat exhaustion were some of the after effects that could occur if precautions are not taken.
Several areas including Kurunegala, Matale, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Moneragala would also experience dry weather and residents were warned to take extra precautions when being out in the open in these areas as well.
The Met Department said the Heat Index Forecast was calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and the effect it has on the body.
The department advises the public to remain hydrated and take breaks while also trying to stay in the shade as often as possible at job sites. They also advised those caring for the elderly and the sick who are indoors to take extra precautions and not to leave children unattended.
