General Fonseka meets US Ambassador in Colombo   
General Sarath Fonseka met with the United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka Patricia Butenis this afternoon, sources close to the General told the Daily Mirror. When contacted by Daily Mirror online the US Embassy in Sri Lanka neither denied nor confirmed if such a meeting took place.

Principal becomes first A-H1N1 victim in Kurunagala    
The first death in Kurunagala from the A-H1N1 influenza virus has been reported with the demise of a 58 year old school principal who had been admitted to the Kurunagala Teaching Hospital by his family yesterday and had succumbed to the illness today.

Lankans in Jeddah to remain under the bridge    
Sri Lanka embassy officials in Jeddah say that nothing can be done about the plight of over 200 Sri Lankan migrant workers living under a bridge in Sharafiya until the 2nd of December in light of the fact that all government institutions in Saudi have been closed for the Haj holidays.

Government probing alleged threats to Fonseka’s life   
The government is investigating claims that the life of former Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka is under threat. The Government was also looking into the newspaper reports that the General had not been in the country during the final stages of the war.

Announcement on presidential elections expected soon    
SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena has said that an announcement on the presidential elections could be expected soon, even as soon as over the course of the end of the week. He said the government was waiting for an auspicious time to make the announcement.

Ministry not informed about Kandy school closure   
The Education Ministry had not been informed about the decision by the Central Provincial Council to close down schools in the area over swine flu fears. Education Minister Susil Premajayantha says any provincial council should consult his Ministry before taking such a decision.

Fonseka writes to the troops, pledges to protect democracy   
General Sarath Fonseka in a letter to the troops has promised to work to restore human rights, media freedom, social justice, ethnic unity and peaceful coexistence. Fonseka said his security had now been reduced to 25 guards from a contingent of over 200 when he was in service.

US department issues revised travel advice for Sri Lanka    
The US has revised its travel advice to Sri Lanka in the wake of improved stability in the southern and western areas of the country with the cessation of hostilities. It however warns U.S. citizens about the risks of travel to the North and East as there are still uncleared landmines.

The JVP is hoping to have discussions with General Sarath Fonseka on nominating him as a common candidate for a presidential election, JVP MP Vijitha Herath said. The main topic of the discussion would be regarding steps to abolish the executive presidency.

Economic collapse in Lanka would affect all- IMF   
Caroline Atkinson, the director of the External Relations Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says an economic collapse in Sri Lanka would make lives worse for everybody and it was in that context that the agency decided to give economic support to the country.

The Sri Lankan film ‘Machan’ is set to premier at the prestigious Empire Theatre at Leicester Square in London today. Meanwhile the UK based Guardian newspaper has given 'Machan' a four star rating and calls it "Slumdog sans songs, but with real soul".

Over 50 passengers injured in Tangalle bus collision   
Over 50 passengers were injured after a CTB bus heading from Matara to Kataragama collided head on with a private bus coming towards Matara near Unakuruwa, Tangalle this morning. The injured were rushed to hospital and no one was reported to be in a serious condition.

Lanka has a chance to extend GSP beyond mid 2010- EC   
Sri Lanka will have the GSP plus trade concession at least until mid 2010 and stands a chance of continuing with the special incentive arrangement, the European Commission (EC) has said. Meanwhile Sri Lanka says it sees a clear element of political motivation behind the EU probe on Lanka.

US centre predicts more rain in Sri Lanka next week   
The US National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) saw more rain being generated over Sri Lanka and along the Tamil Nadu coast between November 19 to 26. The following week is forecast to see a fresh wave of rains approach the Tamil Nadu coast from the east and the southeast.

Restrictions on boat engines lifted in the Kalpitiya seas   
Restrictions against the use of boat engines exceeding 30 Horse Power (HP) by fishermen in the Kalpitiya seas was lifted by the Fisheries Ministry today. Deputy Minister Neomal Perera said that over 100 fishermen were affected by the earlier restrictions.

India’s worry over General Fonseka’s Presidency …
The Indian media in its reports earlier speculated that India’s Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee who is due to visit Sri Lanka (SL) in connection with the former Foreign Minister of SL Late Lakshman Kadirgamar’s memorial oration will be meeting President Mahinda Rajapakse and inquiring about the current political situation in the country vis a vis General Sarath Fonseka’s resignation.
