In an attempt to ensure the exporters get their products on to the global shelf in a seamless manner, the International Trade State Minister warned stern action would be taken against the officers who add barriers to the already Sri Lanka has urged Thai officials to pay significant attention to existing red tape.

If we can’t do business how can we increase our exports? If the officers are not in compliance with our determination, we will have to take stern action. It is time we change our ways of work,” charged Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe at the latest Exporters’ Forum held in Colombo. He stressed it was imperative for the departments and agencies to think out of the box and provide solutions instead of making exports a daunting exercise. Calling for new systems and processes, Senasinghe said, “If we keep quoting ordinances we won’t be able to do anything in Sri Lanka. We need to see what is practical. For that you all (state department staff) need to be creative, else will stay behind. Sri Lanka is good at saying the law is such so there is nothing we can do about it. It is time we change our working culture.” The minister went on to say there was “nothing to lose” by looking at new and innovative ways of supporting the export community. During the three-hour session, where exporters brought to light the barriers faced, it was observed that the issues were in the areas of obtaining licences, renewing licences and obtaining approvals. The latter was a hindrance pointed out across diverse sectors. The Customs was another area that was noted to be adding to the exporters’ plight. Exporters urged the ministry to ensure timeframes are imposed for every process to avoid delays. (SAA)
