The UNP will hold urgent talks on Tuesday to discuss the leadership crisis and the future of the party after 25 UNP MP’s warned that they will sit as independent MPs in Parliament if the party crisis is not settled soon.

UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera, who is among the 25 UNP MPs, told Daily Mirror online that the crisis faced by the party had gone out of control and if a solution is not found by next week then they will sit independently in parliament.

"Enough is enough. For years we have been talking about revamping the party and no one is doing anything. This is a neverending problem for all the UNP supporters and members. We urge the leader to have a quick and urgent solution," Jayasekara said.

He added, " On Wednesday we told the party leader we need to call for a meeting but he declined. We are extremely worried about this situation. I will raise this matter on Tuesday and if it is not addressed, then 25 MPs including myself will sit as independent MPs in Parliament. We have had enough," Jayasekara added.

The meeting on Tuesday will take place between UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasingha and several UNP members who have been calling for an end to the leadership crisis. The future of the organization will also be discussed during the meeting, a senior UNP MP told Daily Mirror online.

A group of prominent UNP members had on Wednesday called for an urgent meeting with Wickramasingha to discuss issues arising within the party particularly over the leadership crisis.

In a letter handed over to the Party Leader that same day the UNP members had called for the meeting to take place that very evening but the request was rejected by Wickramasingha who suggested the meeting take place next week.

The UNP members were of the opinion that one of the ways in which the leadership crisis could be settled was to create a new ‘Senior Leadership’ post within the party to which Wickramasingha should be appointed. The members had then stated that Sajith Premadasa should be appointed as the new UNP leader and Karu Jayasuriya should be retained as the Deputy Leader of the party.

Meanwhile, UNP MP John Amaratunga while confirming that the party would meet Wickramasingha on Tuesday to discuss its future said that  opposition political parties and various organizations are also expected to be present during the meeting to discuss the future of the country. Ranil, this is the way you are paying for the betrayal done to the sacred land in 2002 by signing the Peace agreement with LTTE.

Lanke Banda Friday, 10 September 2010 08:53 AM

If RW ia acting this way Imagine what would happen if he Becomes the President He is sure to bring in 19 th amendment to declare himself as the life President.

    Nihal Friday, 10 September 2010 09:00 AM

    What about Sagala?

    rajitha Friday, 10 September 2010 09:08 AM

if 25 were to become independent ranil would automatically lose his opposition leader position i think. who's gonna become the opposition leader then?

    Dinesh Friday, 10 September 2010 09:13 AM

Long time coming.... This should have done a long time before....Power to the rebels!

    lalith Friday, 10 September 2010 09:21 AM

So what? then they shall go down in history to be the most sincere partymen of the UNP. Anyone who switches sides are traitors.

    lalith Friday, 10 September 2010 09:22 AM

This government loves you! Please keep attacking Ranil.

    lalith Friday, 10 September 2010 09:23 AM

Who is this everybody? All government supporters and opposition pole vaulting bootlickers want Ranil out. Decent and right minded people want Ranil to remain as leader of the UNP.

    Anushka Friday, 10 September 2010 09:27 AM

Enough is enough. This is the time for drastic action. Otherwise UNP will soon be reduced to nothing and JVP or the TNA will be the main opposition, which I believe most of the country would want to avoid.

Above the crowd Friday, 10 September 2010 09:36 AM

They will talk ,but no guts to do it. Please don't fool us .We are sick of back bone less people like you.

    Sameera Friday, 10 September 2010 09:48 AM

dear Lalith, keep it up.. MR loves you. .... Ranil forever.. LOL..

Ryan Hudson Friday, 10 September 2010 09:51 AM

Can somebody tell me what the problem is? Opposition and government working in consensus at the moment. Prices of goods are at rock bottoms. Country is peaceful and developing fast. All who oppose this should be sent to a place like siberia.

    Ravana Friday, 10 September 2010 09:58 AM

    Yes, something definitely worth considering.

    Ravana Friday, 10 September 2010 09:59 AM

    Not to mention uneducated !

    pwc Friday, 10 September 2010 10:04 AM

They how about Mangala, Ravi and even Karu ??? Aren't they are your top leaders ??

    nish286 Friday, 10 September 2010 10:14 AM

the 6 who shifted were called "women". so what about being independent? neither man nor woman??? :)

    snl Friday, 10 September 2010 08:46 AM

It's high time Ranil took a decision FOR the party and not in his favoiur. The MP's should have taken this move long ago to force Ranil to his senses. Otherwise Ranil will forever drag this issue UNTIL the end of him or the UNP. We have precedence from the likes of Ranil in our history: "Raja ho Ma ho Ganaga ho!"

Tm Abay Friday, 10 September 2010 10:44 AM

But Ranil is not decent like U brother. Cos he doesn't hav the decency 2 walk away even after his inability is proven many times

chris abey Friday, 10 September 2010 10:50 AM

Ranil must realise that he must go.He has failed first as a leader of the Opposition. He should have gone to the parliament on such an important day as the 18-A and debated and voted against it instead of protesting like a fool .The people are let down by him, they are trampled upon by the govt.and he is still holding on to his leadership position.
We should try Sajit. Nothing lost.He will have the bad and good of his father for sure but he can be moulded.

    Podilamaya Friday, 10 September 2010 11:04 AM

    Long Live Ranil

    Anushka Friday, 10 September 2010 11:10 AM

"All government supporters"? On the contrary, the government and their supporters would probably prefer if Ranil stays rather than replacing him with Sajith or somebody else.

    Pali Friday, 10 September 2010 11:16 AM

Ranil has shown his inability to win elections. He talks to the brain and not to the heart. I think he MUST leave the leadership immediately before others leave the party. Then the majority of voters in SL (even non UNPers) will respect him at least for that action

    Nimal Friday, 10 September 2010 11:29 AM

We are so sorry & disgusted as supporters of this great party....RANIL has to go...otherwise JVP the 3 rd force will become strong in the near future....we DONT want them...do something we appeal to RANIL...the only alternative is to appoint Sajith...the only hope to save this party.

Dr Wickramatillake Friday, 10 September 2010 11:34 AM

Ranil Wickramasinghe is a worse dictator than Mahinda Rajapaksa

Dr Wickramatillake Friday, 10 September 2010 11:36 AM

Then UNP will be a one man party. Ranil is NO people's man. He must go for the sake of the party.

    JANAKA_LONDON Friday, 10 September 2010 04:08 PM

    Well said.

    rohantha Friday, 10 September 2010 06:06 PM

Lets have another committee to decide on the results of the previous committee

    Dayaratne Saturday, 11 September 2010 04:57 AM

I'm not so sure they will remain. And even Mangala may have the common sense to leave Ranil - to reform a real United National Party.
But i must confess I don't know any of these people personally.

    Dayaratne Saturday, 11 September 2010 04:59 AM

No, no. Sajith & Co.must be the UNP. Let the others form a new party.

    Dayaratne Saturday, 11 September 2010 05:14 AM

Quite right Dr. I remember your comment on the renegade Thomian, Lakshman Seneviratne.

Above the crowd Saturday, 11 September 2010 08:26 AM

What a bunch of gutless cowards

    damiya Sunday, 12 September 2010 06:43 AM

He will be with Mangi...what ever side.

    Amerasinghe Friday, 10 September 2010 07:41 AM

Lets not even make RW Senior Leader.. Lets make his position to be the Shameless Leader ... suits him right :)

    Holman Friday, 10 September 2010 07:00 AM

Better Sajith forms a new party.

    S. Rajapaksha Friday, 10 September 2010 07:00 AM

    I will join UNP.

    Watchman Friday, 10 September 2010 07:02 AM

Delay may cause never ending problems.

Positive Thinker Friday, 10 September 2010 07:08 AM

Probably Ranjan and Rosy will also remain.

    Cynic Friday, 10 September 2010 07:17 AM

    pwc,
Are they companions in a journey?

    willows Friday, 10 September 2010 07:18 AM

The only way out is make GSF Opposition Leader and make Sajith UNPleader for a hop of a future????

    LMG Friday, 10 September 2010 07:19 AM

Please appoint Sajith Premada as Party Leader while Mr.R.W. remains as opposition leader of the party.

    mayu Friday, 10 September 2010 07:20 AM

wel done guys... go ahead.. this is wot we need from UNP members who have back bone..

Enough is enough with this Ranil guy.. He spoiled the democrasy of this country.

    Meth Friday, 10 September 2010 07:25 AM

Dayasiri and any others who want to leave UNP. Please get the hell out of the party as soon as you desire . You people anyway will leave and it's better to leave sooner than later as it's obviously clear to us voters what your intents are..

    sara Friday, 10 September 2010 07:27 AM

all of them knows jolly well with Ranil they will never ever win... they only support him because their survival depends on him... MR is this powerful for the simple reason RW is a weakest leader this country has ever had... even 18th amendments would not have passed if not for RW.. Please get rid of this man

    athula Friday, 10 September 2010 07:29 AM

    good stratergic move

    kewats Friday, 10 September 2010 07:31 AM

I think with the current action of Ranil we should not even let him be the opposition leader. Let him be the Senior Leader. Sajit the Leader with all powers to reorganize,Dayasiri the Chief Organizer, Mangala the Media Head. UNP should work as a United Opposition with SF and JVP to send MR packing.

    Wasantha Friday, 10 September 2010 07:34 AM

Under the UNP constitution change of leadership is a miracle. MP's should pass a resolution and appoint Sajith as the Leader. Then stop all the future dealings with RW. Then he will become free and can use the time to have a cup of tea with MR., who too likes gossip.

    MK Friday, 10 September 2010 07:35 AM

UNP's 2012 has arrive 2 years early...!! Pathetic state of affairs. A country without an opposition.

Oyage sudu kella Friday, 10 September 2010 07:37 AM

Aiyo UNP eka hari boring, we need some 'venasak' aney.

    pwc Friday, 10 September 2010 06:56 AM

Only Tissa, Ravi, Akila, Mangala will remain with Ranil.

    Neela Friday, 10 September 2010 07:43 AM

If the Sajitha Premadasa appoint as Party leader only UNP has future

    Bandaraa. Friday, 10 September 2010 07:43 AM

Now that the U.N.P. have go reduced to 43 M.P.s and a further 25 will sit as independents Ranil's U.N.P. group will be reduced to 18 M.P. Then they will out vote Ranil from the leader of the opposition post and appoint Sajith to that post. This will be the answer to solve the leader ship problem with in the U.N.P.There is another 5 1/2 years for the next general elections to revamp the New U.N.P. under a new leader ship.

jim jam Friday, 10 September 2010 07:46 AM

Only Rakneel will be left in the UNP!

Percy Mandawala Friday, 10 September 2010 07:51 AM

Then we have a situation where an opposition leader without members under his command. It is high time the members appoint a new leader for the oppostion who can really challenge this regime.

    Prabu Friday, 10 September 2010 08:04 AM

As long as he is the Opp leader, the Government will have a good time in the parliment. There should be a strong opp leader to deal with a strong government. RW is not strong enough to that job. He will do what ever Mangala wants him to do.

    Athi Friday, 10 September 2010 08:08 AM

All democratic minded people want UNP to become a strong opposition party and rise against the formulation of anti-democratic laws. Ranil is clinging on to his position practicing un-democratic methods and has already ruined UNP. Though it will be a big challenge for the new UNP leader to resurrect UNP it can be done, if not within one year but definitely within six years. Good luck to the rebel UNP Mps.

    Sue Friday, 10 September 2010 08:14 AM

You have taken the correct decision. If the UNP members are really anxious to help strengthen the party, they don't have to join the govt. They can all form an Independent party and inform everyone why they are doing it. That seems to be the only solution. Best of luck

    Rizwan Friday, 10 September 2010 08:21 AM

this group is doing the right thing. may god bless them in this.Dont hang on to the shawl. Also dont tolerate your undemocratic, shameless, leader. With JVP and TNA may be you can appoint leader of opposition fresh.
My pick for the job is Dayasiri.

    mohandev Friday, 10 September 2010 08:22 AM

Typical 'Karmaya' faced by UNP for all the crimes they allowed to create & blossom out to be a 'no return back' situation for innocent people of Sri Lanka with their power hungry constitution & all evil open economy forced on all of us after 1977. its pay back time.

kks perera Friday, 10 September 2010 08:25 AM

GOOD IDEA, ATHI, BUT SEND HIM HOME, WHAT SENIOR LEADERSHIPS ? HE WILL TRY TO DICTATE TERMS FROM THERE -- LOYALTY

Tm Abay Friday, 10 September 2010 08:27 AM

This is a good move. There's no other way 2 get rid of the weak leader

Sri lankan Friday, 10 September 2010 08:29 AM

Enough is enough. Go home men.. evrybody wants you to go home. This is not your family business.

Gayan Samarasekara Friday, 10 September 2010 08:38 AM

Please respect Mr Rienzie Algama's last words.

    sw Friday, 10 September 2010 08:45 AM

UNPers do not know whether it is coming or going, that is why a useless politician like Ranil is still at the helm.
