The United National Party (UNP) lashed out at its Gampaha District MP Karu Jayasuriya yesterday and asked him not to bring the party into disrepute. In a strongly worded three-page letter addressed to Mr. Jayasuriya, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that there would not be a future for him (Mr. Jayasuriya) in the party unless he respected the party leadership and the collective decisions of the Working Committee.

There is a difference of opinion between Mr. Jayasuriya and the UNP leadership over his decision to attend a politically rally with former army commander Sarath Fonseka tomorrow. In response to an October 15h letter sent by Mr. Jayasuriya to UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mr. Attanayake said that if Mr. Jayasuriya was sincerely interested in working for the abolition of the executive presidency, he should have discussed the matter directly with the leadership instead of copying his letter to the media to get publicity.

Quoting the UNP Constitution, the general secretary said that a member should not participate in any political activities of any entity or any individual not affiliated to the party.

Mr. Attanayake wrote, “You supported this stand by holding up your hand. I would like to point out that there is no barrier for you to carry out political activities with parties that have officially teamed up with the UNP.

Also, the UNP general secretary said, Mr. Jayasuriya was a person who had betrayed the party. The political movement to be formed by Mr. Fonseka was having discussions to join the UNP-led alliance. In such a context, he said, it was unethical for him to join this rally on the pretext of campaigning for the abolition of the executive presidency.

Referring to Mr. Jayasuriya’s crossover to the government in 2007, he said that Mr. Jayasuriya had exposed himself.

He continued, “Now you are trying to team up with a political movement that includes the former chief justice, Sarath N. Silva.  Mr. Silva is responsible for various undemocratic acts. He has admitted that he gave rulings for the strengthening of executive presidency.”

What ever the alliance is formed nothing can be done to defeat our KING.

    Lobo Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:32 AM

Ranil and his cohorts are doing a damn good job of disgracing the grand old party all by themselves so no need to put the blame on Karu. Ranil should really try listening to the wishes of others

true sri lankan Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:34 AM

Their should be some reason.... behind.... why UNP not participating in the rely ..... i respect it... individual should go with the party....

    AKRAM Wednesday, 17 October 2012 07:45 AM

    Dear wazeem,
dont think that everythings are forever.everydays are getting change on their way.

    Nodrog Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:44 AM

Why doesn't the UNP WC must explain why they won't participate in this rally. Is it because they feel threatened by the popularity it has won and feel overshadowed?

Big Ears Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:36 AM

Why not Ranil make a statement. Is he deaf, blind and now also dumb.

Al Rasa Wednesday, 17 October 2012 04:18 AM

Karu Jayasooriya had a narrow escape in Preferential votes in the last general election and other odd candidates like Upekha Swarnamalee went on top of the preferential vote list. This means that Karu is not a significant and a popular political figure
Actually Ranil,Tissa and others are having more strength to handle a party and UNP can achieve victory if you all can sound one common strategy.

    Gregory Wednesday, 17 October 2012 04:52 AM

Its about time Karu, Sajith,Dayasiri, Rosy etc went their own way and start a new party, I am sure they would achive alot more than with Ranil

matara man Wednesday, 17 October 2012 04:47 AM

I agree with Al Rasa, No one shuld betray the leadership.

    willows Wednesday, 17 October 2012 04:54 AM

get rid of RW, SP and TA, UNP will be a good fighting force???

    leelananda Wednesday, 17 October 2012 05:03 AM

when people like you are the voters, it is not a surprise that even pig can be elected, not only upekha swarnamalee.

    YEHIYA Wednesday, 17 October 2012 05:13 AM

it showed voters mind. karu is gentleman in politics. UNP leadership no intent to topple the MR

    Ravishan Wednesday, 17 October 2012 05:29 AM

RW & Tissa are good to formulate non winable strategies

Imran Hussein Wednesday, 17 October 2012 05:24 AM

They are most welcome to do so. Thats what RW has been telling them indirectly. I have a question, who join who? why cant Gen SF and Karu support the UNP instead as a common opposition front?

    Kanchana Wednesday, 17 October 2012 05:50 AM

I don't see karu as man with a mission. this guy contested for UNP leadership and now going after SF...poor karu

    Oshanda Wednesday, 17 October 2012 06:24 AM

There is no future for UNP with Ranil, So its better that Karu Join with SF to strengthen his hands. No body could stop SF been the leader of this country

    Ranjith Wednesday, 17 October 2012 06:58 AM

Karu is lost in the wilderness. He does not know whom to turn. When there is no vision you tend to go behind everybody. Finally he will end up in the dust bin of politics along with SF & SN

    Ranjith Wednesday, 17 October 2012 07:00 AM

SF will be like Prabhakaran. He will only dreeam for leadership & he will never be since he doesn't have leadership qualities.

    Nadi Wednesday, 17 October 2012 06:52 AM

It is a governments dream to have such a divided and ineffectual Opposition. Ranil and Tissa are the willing servants of the regime...the people are suffering and need a real Opposition not a sham one. Sadly there appears to be no leader of quality to fight for us.

Ravi Seneviratne Wednesday, 17 October 2012 07:07 AM

UNP is going nowhere with RW/TA etc, we are just fedup with all this bullshit , never will UNP under RW ever win an election in the distance future, this is proven with so many elections in the past and will be proven in the future as well.

    saman Wednesday, 17 October 2012 12:00 PM

Because everyone know what UNP can achieve with RW. Only UNP EXCO and few like you don't know it
