The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) together will conduct raids on night clubs and karaoke bars in the city with the police in order to keep a close eye on minors attending night clubs and consuming liquor.

Police media spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody said that the PNB together with the Anti Vice Squad conducted several raids in karaoke bars and night clubs and found out that most of them are distributing liquor.

“We arrested a 15 year old girl who was consuming alcohol”, he said. All together six night clubs were raided yesterday. The 15 year old girl was working in one of the night clubs that was raided. She together with the clubs manager was taken into custody and the investigations are being done by the Bambalapitiya police.

Out of that four night clubs were found for distributing liquor without a license and also for violating the license.

Under the directions of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya such raids will be carried out in night clubs in the Colombo City and also in other areas to investigate illegal activities being done inside such clubs. (SD)

The biggest problem with Sri Lankan clubs and pubs is that they are associated with people who want to act posh or spoilt and waste their parents money. If you look at places like Europe, Australia, and America, "ordinary" people who go to clubs and pubs all the time. So there's no stigma attached to it. and some people happily go there and not consume alcohol. you actually go there to HAVE FUN. once we get rid of this fake exclusivity and have some family friendly establishments in SL, the general public can see that it is actually possible for youths to frequent these places and have good CLEAN fun as well. Shame it's associated with thugs and drug dealers at the moment.

I agree with Vinaya, He may be as a parent understand the problem. Roovez, you are affected by western syndrome. there are enough organizations and youth centers to have enough friends and so on.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 02:31 PM

They will raid and rob people in clubs and they will drag away young girls under the pretex of arrest. Nice job given to police. The police like the night club environment, they will mis-use powers by trying to do various dirty acts on people.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 02:33 PM

You are infected with western syndrome, leave the govt take proper action to curb them. I welcome ban on the polluting musics too

    Friday, 23 April 2010 02:42 PM

Sri Lanka trying to become a tourist and financial hub, need such kind of entertainment, for eg- Bangkok & Dubai. But should see that minors dont attend.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 02:46 PM

If parents are unable to care for and supervise their children till they become adults they are not fit to be parents.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 03:21 PM

    well said Roovez

    Friday, 23 April 2010 03:50 PM

Finally a good decision. Sri lanka is also in the Top 10 List for
Prostitution, drugs, alcohol, rapes etc. Let's hope something good will happen.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 12:58 PM

so raiding night clubs is not a good thing? ...minors consuming alcohol should be overlooked?

are you saying sri lankans behead people Taliban style?

I dont know what is in these people's mind to think like this!

    Friday, 23 April 2010 04:48 PM

why can't thay go to a nightclub

    Friday, 23 April 2010 04:52 PM

    for real or for show

    Saturday, 24 April 2010 01:23 AM

    What about Ministerial Brats?

    Saturday, 24 April 2010 04:52 AM

will last until a call from a minister to leave the clubs alone... he..he..

    Saturday, 24 April 2010 04:57 AM

Great start.... lets talk about the same subject in next year by this time???

    Saturday, 24 April 2010 05:30 AM

You will find a lot of our ministers' sons there.

    Saturday, 24 April 2010 06:30 AM

They've already tackled TV - haven't you seen that ridiculous message and pixelated image that appears when there's a scene with cigarettes/alcohol? Stupid country.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 07:49 AM

great! excellent..finally something brave by the Police, but wonder how long this will last.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 12:02 PM

Minister' kith and kin " WATCH OUT "

    Friday, 23 April 2010 12:00 PM

Put some of the ministerial brats on the job!

    Friday, 23 April 2010 11:30 AM

Good thing that this controls under age people going to the night club. Because they doesn't know how to behave. Its a problem for others also.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 10:51 AM

What is wrong with our people. What kind of fool will want to ban night clubs in SL.Do you guys want to make SL like a fundamentalist middle east country ?I can understand totally the call to ban akon becuase he is an anti buddhist and such people should not be allowed in to SL.But banning night clubs is totally unreasonable

    Friday, 23 April 2010 09:19 AM

Lets become purists and have no tolerance for fun and entertainment.
Do people realize these drammatic tactics are to pull wool over our eyes so we won't notice what is going on under our noses?

    Friday, 23 April 2010 09:08 AM

This new thought is excellent but the question is whether this could be implemented as some of the elite clubs are owned by Government bigwigs and these clubs are patronized by the siblings of politicians both the Government and the opposition. Well, if this is done it would be definitely an endorsement for a 'Suba Anagathayak' . Good luck .

    Friday, 23 April 2010 08:48 AM

Ban Akon.. raid night clubs.. heading Taliban style... whats next???? ban on music, TV...

    Friday, 23 April 2010 08:41 AM

    Good for younger generation

    Friday, 23 April 2010 08:27 AM

With all these gangsters, drug smugglers and drunkards in all these clubs all they managed to do was arrest a 15 year old girl who was consuming alcohol..!! Well done.. Amazing.. Extraordinary work..!! Keep it up..

    Friday, 23 April 2010 08:22 AM

A very good decision made by the government

    Friday, 23 April 2010 08:21 AM

banning night clubs will not solve the problem. May be you have never stepped in to a club to understand what is happenning there. FYI people go there to have a good time with their friends.. Parents should monitor what their kids are up to..

    Friday, 23 April 2010 08:16 AM

owners who took them for work. arrest them first. if they are customers also arrest owners.why did they allow teenagers to enter pub

    Friday, 23 April 2010 07:59 AM

Watch out officers, you may find SB,s and Dr.Merwyns sons in the act.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 07:56 AM

A most welcome decision that should have been taken long ago. Parents work hard to help their Children have a comfortable life and Children in return bust up their Parents hard earned money in these Night Clubs & Karaoke Bars. Many of these places are well known for other nefarious activities. The most sensible decision would be to ban Night Clubs & Karaoke Bars in Sri Lanka.

    Friday, 23 April 2010 07:51 AM

best thing to do is close those Club....
