UNP General secretary Tissa Attanayake said the reason for the UNPs non attendance at independence day celebrations in Trincomalee, was not in protest, but due to engagements previously planned by the party.

“We held our independence day celebrations in Galle, this was only because we had pre planned to work on the party’s membership drive in the Galle district. There was no boycotting or any other reasons for our non participation at the event held in Trincomallee except for the fact that this was a pre planned engagement of the party” he said. (H.F)
