New drug smuggled into SL

A new kind of drug called Methamphetamine was smuggled into Sri Lanka for the first time in 2010, in addition to Heroin, Hashish and Cocaine, Parliament was informed today.

Last year, as many as 26 kilos of Methamphetamine had been seized by the authorities concerned.

Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardane informed the House in this regard in response to a question by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.

According to the answer, 287.3 kilos of heroin had been seized during the last ten years, 6.252 kilos of Hashish and 16 kilos of Cocaine. In 2010 alone, 116.5 kilos of heroin had been seized and up to November this year 4.9 kilos.

Mr. Gunawardane expressed his gratitude to the police officers who were involved in such raids despite numerous hurdles. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

Thank god the drugs were siezed... Meth is one of the most dangerous drugs in the world... currently a major problem also in USA... keep this monstor away from Sri Lankan soil... it will ruin the youth...

Meth is one of the most highly addictive drugs in most countries. Its used in Iran and North Korea as it could be made at home. In Western countries its quite common now. Cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine/ephedrine are the base for making meth in 'home labs'. Now these cold remedies are controlled in most western countries. Because of this, purchasers have been limited to buying small quantities and required to show I.D. to purchase them.

The minister can get real , true statistics of the kinds and quantity of drugs smuggled in from his colleagues in his cabinet who are the masters of these deals.

Not correct. Ecstasy is methylenedioxymethampheta-mine
and Meth is Methamphetamine, two totally different drugs. But now there is a newer drug 'Meth laced with ecstasy'. This dangerous poly-drug combination of methamphetamine and ecstasy can have severe health consequences, especially as both drugs have toxic effects on the brain.
