The Defence Ministry says it has yet to receive a request from Parliament Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to grant clearance to send detained former Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka to Kenya to attend the four-day Commonwealth Parliamentary Association meeting in September.

Defence Ministry official Lakshman Hulugalle, when contacted by Daily Mirror online, said that the Ministry will decide if to send Fonseka or not for the meeting in September once a request is made.

Fonseka is currently in military custody and before a Court Martial over charges of conspiring against the government and the President and also over allegations he carried out some illegal arms deals during his tenure as the Army Commander. (Daily Mirror online)

    Friday, 11 June 2010 06:27 AM

So the decision is made not any legal department, but by an individual! It is clear as to who holds the law of the country!

British mafia to get the General freed in order to made him a cardboard hero so that he can confess in front of the BBC.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 06:47 AM

The decision to send General Fonseka to commenwealth meeting is taken by the highest institution of the country.
It is undemocratic if anybody is going to overide that decision.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 06:47 AM

I am 100% sure he will not get the clearance.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 06:50 AM

How pathetic it is see the war hero is being ill treated in this manner. Most of the people seems to have forgotton how tirelessly he dedicated himself to the task of freeing the country from the clutches of terrorists. If not for the Generals strategies, excellent co-ordination with all forces and stake holders coupled with the political leadership that we are able to live peacefully today. Let us not forget that.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 07:02 AM

For sure Gen. Fonseka will NOT be allowed to return to Sri Lanka. Defense Ministry is awaiting for Gota's approval seal.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 07:07 AM

i feel some bad thing will happn during this tour. So better not to go.. People still love SF!!!

    Friday, 11 June 2010 07:22 AM

HE WILL NEVER RETURN TO SRI LANKA AGAIN.

IT WILL BE FOOLISH TO LET HIM OUT OF THE COUNTRY.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 07:41 AM

SL parliament is the highest authority in the legislature for ordinary citizens. Not for the Defence Ministry. What a pathatic situation?

    Friday, 11 June 2010 07:45 AM

Take it easy boys. Permission will be granted.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 07:47 AM

The reality of the situation is General Fonseka is currently in military custody. Thus, he is not in a position to undertake travel to Kenya without being released from such custody. It is in that context that the intervention of the Ministry of Defence becomes relevant and necessary. There is no rational basis to assume that the Speaker's decision to include him in a Parliamentary delegatiion also included an instruction to free him from military custody.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 07:54 AM

He loves Sri Lanka too much to do such a dastardly thing unlike others who fleece the country dry.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 08:10 AM

The war was won due to strategical planning of General and dedication of the soldiers. Anybody to deny that is a genuine traitor. To sincere soldiers this man is still a hero.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 08:10 AM

Exactly, and he will vanish to US and betray us again.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 08:11 AM

I was under the impression that Parliament is suppreme

    Friday, 11 June 2010 08:55 AM

Kumar, your point is absolutely correct.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 08:57 AM

Why doesn't war Hero keep quiet about the war now, because the war is over? Does he always have to talk about the war crimes and things that he doesn't know, because he was out of the country? He will gain the sympathy and the respect of the majority, not only the JVP lot, if he keeps quiet like Gen.Powell or even Gen.Eisenhower. The other former Army commanders of SL who did good services do live respectable lives, just follow them for god's sake, without putting the country in peril.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 09:09 AM

should not let him attend because he will tarnish image of our Country as well as our heroic soldiers..

    Friday, 11 June 2010 06:29 PM

I feel that somebody wants him to go, and never come back!

    Friday, 11 June 2010 09:08 PM

It is the 'king' and 'all the king's men' who hold onto the law of this country!

    Friday, 11 June 2010 09:46 AM

SF will get the clearance. It will prove government is honest on parliamentary freedom in Sri Lanka while it will be a good opportunity for SF to prove that he is a true Sri Lankan once again by upholding Sri Lankans trust on him as a people's representative.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 10:10 AM

No need to discuss further and get exhausted. No legal entity will allow any one who is having charges against him to leave the country until he gets cleared by the judiciary. It is simple as that...........Don't waste your time. There are more important things to do

    Friday, 11 June 2010 10:18 AM

what nonesense are you talking. Other former army commanders ???? did any one win the war ? they made it a business for everyone. Why can't SF talk about the war, why only Rajapakses can talk ?

    Friday, 11 June 2010 06:20 AM

OMG!!! SF to Kenya ?This irresponsible general will set Kenya on fire too.

    Friday, 11 June 2010 06:25 AM

    Rubbish what a pathetic seen
