LTTE continues to be a threat-India

Justifying the continuation of the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Union government on Friday asserted that the banned organisation continued to be a threat to the country’s sovereignty and integrity.

Immediately after the assassination of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991, the Union government, which had imposed the ban on the LTTE for the first time in May 1992, had been extending it every two years under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

As per the law, the Centre had issued a notification banning the organisation on May 14 for another period of two years.

On Friday, Justice V.K. Jain, who constitutes the one-man Tribunal set up under the Act to go into the ban, conducted a hearing here to decide its validity.

Filing an affidavit before the Tribunal, R.K. Suman, Director of Internal Security, Union Home Ministry said, “Though the LTTE has been decimated, there are reports to indicate that remnant LTTE cadres/leaders [are trying to] regroup and revive the organisation in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere in India.”

He also said there were reports that the banned organisation was likely to revive with the assistance of Maoist organisations in the country.

“The organisation is capable of garnering local support in Tamil Nadu and several others parts in South India on account of linguistic, cultural and ethnic affinity. The LTTE continues to look at Tamil Nadu as a base for anti-India activities. The Central government has information that the LTTE continues to be a threat to territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country,” the Ministry said.

“The LTTE, even after its military defeat, has not abandoned its goal of achieving ‘Tamil Eelam.’ The remnants of the organisation have been clandestinely working by reviving [activities] locally and internationally and continue to propagate its agenda through various means.”

Though the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko’s plea to implead himself in the hearing to oppose the ban was rejected by the Tribunal, he was allowed to place certain questions before it.

Answering a question raised by Vaiko, Mr. Suman said various cases have been registered against pro-LTTE elements and supporters in the preceding 24 months. He was personally aware of four such cases. He also cited the MDMK as one of the organisations, listed as a supporter of the LTTE.

The Tribunal is to continue its hearing on Saturday. (The Hindu)

In Sri Lanka we dont have a threat but the country with fouth largest army in the world is concern. Indira nurtured them and Rajiv paid with his life. After the assasination of their PM they banned the terror grp until then they cuddled the beasts day and night.

India do not have to tell us and it is also not a new news when we see how TNA behave. They, TNA act like typical carbon copy of LTTE or their twin brother.

    Nodrog Sunday, 30 September 2012 04:02 AM

Funny, last time I checked tamils in Col 3,4,5,6,11,12 etc were all living in dignity and as equals with the rest of the Sri lankans. Tamils in the north and east may still, unintentionally, have issues because its only 3 years since the war ended.

    Hussain Saturday, 29 September 2012 06:45 AM

The Central government of India would never approve to lift the ban on the LTTE, after what the LTTE did to a future Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi.

    Pundit Sunday, 30 September 2012 04:22 AM

Don't believe in this game India is playing. They are supporting
them because politically TN is an important player in been
re-elected. They also need SL as an friend regionally.
Therefore, they are not sincere. Usually, I would've
agreed that India is on our side, but the political situation
is such that I believe that they did not vote for us during the
UN conference was because of this.SL always supported them and that is how it works, countries support their friends others refrained due to pressure but not India. Beware of the snake in the grass !

India will do a great service to the Tamils if it destroys any remants of the LTTE, but it must ensure Tamils live with equal rights and dignity in a united Sri Lanka.

    Dear all,
The only way to keep the Monies coming in for rthe emainig players to survive,is to show the world and its LTTE sympathizers that Organization is still active!

    jioe Saturday, 29 September 2012 09:28 AM

ban should be there for at least another 100 years.

    ling Saturday, 29 September 2012 10:22 AM

LTTE can also use another name to surface out as long as the same backers and thinktank are there. We know India fundamental and Agenda towards Sri Lanka does not change.

    N K Ratnam Saturday, 29 September 2012 11:27 AM

It is not India that will be cause of the revival of something like LTTE. It will be Sri Lanka that will be the cause. It will be the same policies that gave rise to the LTTE in the first place Before blaming India for the LTTE look at what Sri Lanka did to create the condition which gave rise to its emergence. Has anything changed? No. If any it has got worse for the Tamil people. Taking away their land, chasing them away from their own paddy fields and coastal villages you expect them to put up shut up. If they do they are not human

    kumaraya Saturday, 29 September 2012 11:29 AM

Do you recall WHO trained the LTTE innitially?

    Nodrog Sunday, 30 September 2012 01:42 PM

India should know better about the LTTE...after all it was their baby which Sri lanka aborted.

NuwaraEliya Citizen Saturday, 29 September 2012 12:00 PM

SALUTE OUR GOOD NEIGHBER. Sri Lanka and India are not just friends but very close relations. Our Culture, religion and origin also connected to them. LTTE killed thousands of innocent people and national leaders in both countries. Please don't allow any terrorist groups to function in any country. THANK YOU Mother India.

    Hal Saturday, 29 September 2012 12:17 PM

Why not MR tell India the the LTTE was completely destroyed. That is what he and his group tell us in Sri Lanka.

    Cobra Saturday, 29 September 2012 12:45 PM

Sure, as long as TN politicians clamor for the lifting of the ban on the LTTE terrorists the threat is real and not only to India but to Lanka as well.

do you recall who created the environment for their birth and sustenance

    Chams Saturday, 29 September 2012 01:23 PM

Lift the ban and let LTTE take care of some more politicians like Rajeev Ghandi. That will be good for Indian progress!!
