In less than a month after India voted for a UNHRC resolution against Sri Lanka, an all-party parliamentary delegation is likely to visit Colombo.
The delegation, led by leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, is expected to be in Sri Lanka from April 16 to 21. The visit, which had earlier been planned for late last year, had to be put off because of assembly elections in five states.
However, the visit at this juncture gains significance in the light of India recently joining 23 other countries to vote for a US-sponsored resolution at the UNHRC, urging Sri Lanka to "credibly investigate" allegations of human rights violations during the last phases of its war against the rebel Tamil Tigers in 2009.
The resolution followed pressure from political parties from Tamil Nadu, including the Congress' ally DMK, to vote for it. Sri Lanka had managed to defeat a similar vote in UNHRC in 2009 with the help of India and other countries.
There were some doubts over whether the Indian delegation will go ahead with its visit after the vote as Sri Lanka, which had appealed to India, was upset over New Delhi's decision.
The all-party delegation is expected to meet top functionaries in the government, including Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and their counterparts, including representatives of Tamil parties.
The allegations of war crimes date back to the last stages of the Sri Lankan civil war which ended in May 2009 with the death of LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran and many of his followers. (The Economic Times)

But, in SL there are white van underground gangs who kidnap people and kill them with the support of ........

If any one from Tamilnadu ask them not to worry .... because in Sri Lanka we WELCOME and we do not round-up and attack.
But very good move. We can see some are not happy with SASKIA & NIKI's comments. But I think that is the truth.
Truth is always bitter

What we must keep in mind is that we are not a colony of India. We will entertain and welcome anyone who has an open mind and who has not been tainted/corrupted by the LTTE supporting diaspora. They could come and see the peace process taking place and the development after 30 years of turmoil in the North and East. So let them come and see for themselves, the progress made in the past 2 years.

The Indian Delegation should speak directly to the people who affected by the war without the presence of Army personnel. they should visit all refugee camps. Over 30,000 Tamils been kept behind electrified babed wire fences for the past several years. The UNHRC is a guide line to follow by the delegation
LOL Friday, 30 March 2012 10:21 PM
LOL. are u sleeping? we are talking about delegations should talk without military presence. then can diaspora/NGO can be there without military?

Also meet and listen to victims of racist LTTE violence - Muslims, Sinhala and Tamils. Especially mmet and listen to Muslim victims of LTTE's ethnic cleansing plan.

Here's a quick reality check -
01. India is Bigger than us.
02. India is stronger than us.
03. India is more powerful than us.
04. India is more influential than us.
05. India is more important than us to the world.
..and though we HATE India for voting against us, we have no choice but to listen and relent to India sometimes.
One more thing, India is just a few miles across Palk- Straights away from us and can literally do some serious damage if they want. Our friends China and Russia are too far way from us and may not be able to intervene in time.
No one can take away the hero status from us, we defeated the LTTE, now let's get on with it and make this the best country in the South and South-East Asia to live in.
Saskia Friday, 30 March 2012 04:51 AM
Good move. Please don't forget to talk to the people in affected areas. Talk to them without the presence of any army personal. Then only they can speak the truth.

Why do you scare about disapora
They are just 1% of SL's population
Fanam Friday, 30 March 2012 06:23 AM
We are not at all excited about your visit. You will surely have conflicting comments. Politicians from North India will praise the progress while politicians from the South will have lot of things to pin point and they will see nothing positive. In addition to this, they will make completely different statements after reaching India. Its waste of time for both countries.

Nodrog58 Friday, 30 March 2012 06:55 AM
How many of these delegations have come and gone and no one has found anything wrong with the rehabilitation / relocating programme yet. Just a waste of time and money which could be used to help the refugees or build the 50,000 houses promised of which only about 600 have been built so far.
sudu Friday, 30 March 2012 07:07 AM
I doubt whether there is a provision to withdraw the vote given @ UNHRC.
