Former foreign minister and the Spokesman for the UNP Mangala Samaraweera said he believed the government was behind the spate of
kidnappings, which he said were now being used to suppress any opposition or dissent, the Telegraph news agency reported.

Before the end of the civil war in May 2009, there was a series of 'White Van' kidnappings and assassinations of government critics and opponents linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elaam (LTTE), including the murder of newspaper editor Lasantha Wickramatunga, who was shot dead by motorcycle gunmen. But since October last year there have been 30 new 'White Van' disappearances, including several dissident figures within the government, said Mr Samaraweera.

"There has been an upsurge in White Van abductions since last October. Even the United States State Department has inquired of the government
the status of its inquiries into these abductions.

Before they were launched against LTTE suspects, but now they are using these tacticsagainst dissidents within the government," he said.

UNP dissident group not supporting to Mangala. He is the man can topple the present regime.Imthiyas, Mayantha & karu must need to UNP working commitee. Ranil need some sort of fairness for above three.

Sri Lankans are never happy with anything. I believe in the Rajapakse government. Even though it is not perfect, they are trying to keep peace and develop this country. No government is perfect and people ought to chose the most effective and least dangerous. Considering these things, who else can lead this country? No one else other than President Mahinda Rajapakse and his government. I sincerely hope that President Rajapakse starts to seriously clamp down on corruption and bring the country together.
Sri Lankans need to understand that this country just started to enjoy peace and I hope and pray that is of a lasting nature. Complaining and criticizing the Rajapakse government is not going to help move forward......
As usual, the unscruplulous characters of SL politics are trying to use fragile situations to bring a bad name to a fairly good president, President Rajapakse.
Sri Lankans, please unite as one nation...............

Sri Lankans complain about everything, even with peace and prosperity that have been longed for almost 30 years. The leadership of the present government, with President Rajapakse at the helm, is who got us here. Support him and unite as one nation. Sri Lanka needs to be supporting this fair government, even though it is not perfect.
No government is perfect...........

Not a single culprit for van abductions have been caught. Old grannies would have done a better job than so called law enforcement !. To our disbelief criminals caught by citizens have been released by master culprits, leading to jungle law. They have replaced the LTTE terror !!.

Why blame Mangala. MR would not have won 2005 Election if not for the UN stint support extended by Mangala & SriPathi. They came out I believe due to the ingratitude shown by MR.We must thank Mangalas for being bold to come out like this. If he remained with MR, licking his boots, he should have enjoyed a previledgedl life. He sacrificed all that and choose the present path a way most ruling Party members reluctant to do so because they are not prepared throwaway privileges being enjoyed by them being with MR.
