Former foreign minister and the Spokesman for the UNP Mangala Samaraweera said he believed the government was behind the spate of
kidnappings, which he said were now being used to suppress any opposition or dissent, the Telegraph news agency reported.

Before the end of the civil war in May 2009, there was a series of 'White Van' kidnappings and assassinations of government critics and opponents linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elaam (LTTE), including the murder of newspaper editor Lasantha Wickramatunga, who was shot dead by motorcycle gunmen. But since October last year there have been 30 new 'White Van' disappearances, including several dissident figures within the government, said Mr Samaraweera.

"There has been an upsurge in White Van abductions since last October. Even the United States State Department has inquired of the government
the status of its inquiries into these abductions.

Before they were launched against LTTE suspects, but now they are using these tacticsagainst dissidents within the government," he said.

Diplomatic talks wont work. Find a way how to keep a fullstop Mr Samaraweera.

Dihan Fernando Friday, 13 April 2012 03:54 PM

Sri Lankans are never happy with anything. I believe in the Rajapakse government. Even though it is not perfect, they are trying to keep peace and develop this country. No government is perfect and people ought to chose the most effective and least dangerous. Considering these things, who else can lead this country? No one else other than President Mahinda Rajapakse and his government. I sincerely hope that President Rajapakse starts to seriously clamp down on corruption and bring the country together.
Sri Lankans need to understand that this country just started to enjoy peace and I hope and pray that is of a lasting nature. Complaining and criticizing the Rajapakse government is not going to help move forward......
As usual, the unscruplulous characters of SL politics are trying to use fragile situations to bring a bad name to a fairly good president, President Rajapakse.
Sri Lankans, please unite as one nation...............

Dihan Fernando Friday, 13 April 2012 04:18 PM

    Sinhalaya Modaya, Kavum Kanna Yodhaya!

Sri Lankans complain about everything, even with peace and prosperity that have been longed for almost 30 years. The leadership of the present government, with President Rajapakse at the helm, is who got us here. Support him and unite as one nation. Sri Lanka needs to be supporting this fair government, even though it is not perfect.
    No government is perfect...........

Real peace Friday, 13 April 2012 06:13 AM

    kiribath Friday, 13 April 2012 04:36 PM

During your time also then govt , was behind so many things, this is just an extention.

    Athula Friday, 13 April 2012 06:15 AM

Everybody knew who were behind these. But we are supposed open the mouth only to eat.

    hisham Friday, 13 April 2012 05:25 PM

If govt is responsible it will be easy for other groups to take advantage and discredit the govt .better for the govt to order full investigation for all abductions or else with time it will boomerang

    Mason Friday, 13 April 2012 06:30 AM

Sir, you are right. It is state sponsored terrorism that is taking place now.

    Malith Saturday, 14 April 2012 11:34 AM

Mangala, you can say any thing you want. You are just talking against every body now because you have failed miserably. I think to keep National Security just ending LTTE is not enough. There's more to these issues than defeating LTTE. We have to handle the Traitors now. It's not easy to handle Traitors because they live among us.

    Ranjani Friday, 13 April 2012 05:43 PM

    Within the government?

    garvin Friday, 13 April 2012 06:34 PM

Remember what you did to journalists when you were in power

    Anil Friday, 13 April 2012 06:31 PM

Not a single culprit for van abductions have been caught. Old grannies would have done a better job than so called law enforcement !. To our disbelief criminals caught by citizens have been released by master culprits, leading to jungle law. They have replaced the LTTE terror !!.

    azath Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:46 AM

Issue some remarks bad of Govt you would taste it

    Nodrog Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:21 AM

Only good thing he did was end the war. But instead of progressing after that we are actually regressing because of his ad-hoc policies. What a lot of money wasted in Hambantota, the port, airport, stadium, buildings for the Commonwealth games etc...

    limatc Friday, 13 April 2012 09:53 AM

AT LEAST SOMEBODY SPEAK OUT WITH COURAGE , WHATEVER SAID AND DONE

buffaloa citizen Friday, 13 April 2012 09:58 AM

This New Year, our cowardly leaders will be lavishly eating kiri bath smiling with their families while knowing the shameless deeds they are directly involved.

    Yehiya Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:54 AM

UNP dissident group not supporting to Mangala. He is the man can topple the present regime.Imthiyas, Mayantha & karu must need to UNP working commitee. Ranil need some sort of fairness for above three.

    ladduwahetti Saturday, 14 April 2012 04:05 AM

This guy Mangala always has some idiotic things to say for everything. Stop talking and support the present govt to find out who is doing this. Talk is chaep, and we are sick of hearing your insane comments. Shut up and do something to help Sri Lanka as a real public servant.

    kosala Saturday, 14 April 2012 03:06 PM

    Mangala can believe on anything.

    hasthi Friday, 13 April 2012 10:29 AM

Does this statment imply Lasantha was linked to LTTE? I doubt; but the things this guy imply he know are amazing...

    Ranjan Saturday, 14 April 2012 04:40 AM

But since we have peace, there should be no place for human right violations under any circumstances now. The Police & the Judiciary should be independent.. The legal system should be used to punish wrong doers.

    Asitha Saturday, 14 April 2012 04:23 AM

This man is in the political wilderness. He critisizes almost everything and never see anything good what the government does.Upto now nobody has been able to prove the govt was behind the white van scenarios.

Calistus Jayatilleke Friday, 13 April 2012 10:02 AM

There is nothing to prove: all intelligent people in the country know that the government is behind the spate of white van abductions. Only blind followers will believe otherwise.

    Amila. Gmila G Friday, 13 April 2012 10:39 AM

What ever comments we make or cry ,This will continue till this Government is in Power . Very soon the color of the Van and the type of vehicle will change.

    Nodrog Friday, 13 April 2012 10:40 AM

The GoSL is really pushing their luck. The wave of popularity and support for winning the war will only last so long...people are slowly but surely getting fed-up.

Sinhala Baudda Friday, 13 April 2012 10:42 AM

Yes Mr Samaraweera you know it well with your own experience. As long as you remain in opposition you all try to safeguard human rights. When you are in power you all disregard human rights. That ' s the bitter truth.

    podilamaya Friday, 13 April 2012 10:45 AM

Executive government executes! so whats wrong in that?

siri elapaha Saturday, 14 April 2012 05:44 AM

    murad Saturday, 14 April 2012 06:24 AM

Mangala, do not be just reactor try something new to prospect the people towards common goal.

    asilva Saturday, 14 April 2012 06:51 AM

Why blame Mangala. MR would not have won 2005 Election if not for the UN stint support extended by Mangala & SriPathi. They came out I believe due to the ingratitude shown by MR.We must thank Mangalas for being bold to come out like this. If he remained with MR, licking his boots, he should have enjoyed a previledgedl life. He sacrificed all that and choose the present path a way most ruling Party members reluctant to do so because they are not prepared throwaway privileges being enjoyed by them being with MR. I salute You Sir MAngala.
