Several powerful personalities of the previous government will have to be arrested based on the information divulged by underworld narcotics kingpin ‘Wele Suda’, Public Order and Disaster Management Minister John Amaratunga told parliament today.

"Wele Suda has divulged plenty of information and we are sorry to say that we will have to arrest powerful people of the previous regime," the minister said in response to a question asked by Opposition MP Shantha Bandara.

He asked whether the documents which contain important details divulged by underworld figure Wele Suda had gone missing.

The minister said he was unable to answer that question because he would have to mention the names of certain MPs if he did so.
He said Wele Suda had confirmed that an Opposition MP had obtained Rs.1.2 million from him.

The minister said a bank book had been taken to custody while more documents would be secured in the next few days.

Wele Suda who was abroad at the time of his arrested and brought back to Sri Lanka after the present Government assumed office in January this year

Talk Talk and Talk all by the politicians . When are we going to see actions and of course the officials. Its best for the politicians to keep quiet until there is official action.

    cyril n Saturday, 21 March 2015 03:31 PM

If sufficient evidence is available there should not be any delay in arresting anyone. The people are not happy with press announcements only but action in real terms please.

MR John.. U said quote" The minister said he was unable to answer that question because he would have to mention the names of certain MPs if he did so. He said Wele Suda had confirmed that an Opposition MP had obtained Rs.1.2 million from him. - unquote.. This is an irresponsible statement my a Parliamentarian.. SO U parliamentarians can hide certain facts to cover your ilk and NOT be transparent and arrest who is involved? SHAME ON YOU... we sent MR home hoping the culprits would be brought to book, seems you lot whether the cronies of the old govt or of the new govt..ALL are CROOKS... IF you are hiding things from the Parliament YOU ARE NOT FIT TO BE in the Legislature... Is it a case of YOU scratch my back I scratch yours..

Minister, remember Duminda Silva was brought to politics by the UN.P this is why the public demands a change in the system.Innocent families are getting ruined because of this kudu business At least now take action.

STOP TALKING AND GET ON WITH IT.TAL TALK THAT IS ALL THESE IDIOTS SEEM TO DO. NO ACTION AT ALL.TURNING OUT TO BE LIKE THE PREVIOUS LOT.

Aba Jayasekera Saturday, 21 March 2015 06:10 PM

The UNP must be waiting for the dissolution of Parliament to reveal the misdeeds of the SLFP politicians because they believe that then they will have a field day and their hopeless minority in the Parliament would not prevent them from carrying out a vicious campaign of arrests of Opposition politicians. Mr. Sirisena and the leadership of the SLFP must make sure that such tactics will fail

    ahamed Saturday, 21 March 2015 12:14 PM

This is not your task just leave the authority interdependently to administer the law and order, UNP now trying to rehabilitate the party by using this temporary provision by doing nothing to country.

no favourations Saturday, 21 March 2015 07:19 PM

i dont favor any political party but i do what is supposes to be right and support the party which does the right things. Actually people this is the reason wht they dont arrest the former MPs bfre d election. its all bcoz of our economy. if the former MPs and all wrong-doers are arrested bfre the election the share mkt will drop dramatically and the economy might end up in a recession thats y the names r even not been announced.. The country is in best administration under our PM Ranil Wickramasinghe. Therez no intelligent person other than Ranil who cn bring prosper to our economy. via DM Android App

Citizen Perera Saturday, 21 March 2015 09:39 PM

Start with disclosure. Followed by enclosure of suspects in hospitals and prisons. When ransom is paid to for their release, then finish off with cover-up and closure. Good job in managing the circus.

    Push Saturday, 21 March 2015 09:43 PM

A notorious drug dealer like Wele Suda divulged the name of an MP who has had dealings with him. What more is needed to arrest the person? What would be the outcome if this happened in another country such as Singapore or England?

    Preethi W Saturday, 21 March 2015 09:59 PM

Whilst I was (and am still is somewhat) an ardent believer of good governance, and thus actively supported the change of regime on the 8th of Jan-2015, and today after 73 days of "Good Governance" we are still most likely in the first few days. John A has been a double agent all the while and I cannot understand why Ranil wanted him in his cabinet.I am lost for words.Preethi W, PhD.

Honest Man Saturday, 21 March 2015 11:54 PM

Enough is enough. Since January 9th you have been telling stories. So far no arrest has been made. Looks likr there is nothing you can do. You will continue to give media statements for another few months. Ranil is with Rajapakses so nothing can be done. Get rid off Ranil sooner before we kick that chap.

    Leena Sunday, 22 March 2015 09:41 AM

How many of you have been to law school? Do you realise that people like Duminda can afford the best lawyers (better than any govt prosecutor) and get the help of the best financial forensics and people who cover up trails. Obviously the arrest will be made when the evidence is water tight and sealed with cement...jeesh

    Charaka Friday, 03 April 2015 05:23 PM

Mr. minister, do not make any more media shows .If there is proof get the police to arrest them and punish .This is what we want from the police, not from the politicians . It will be much better for every one if you people leave the police to do their job correctly .As Your past record dose not have many positives.

Arm-less bodies , and headless bodies found in some lakes in Sri Lanka. Hope these are NOT the witnesses for proving those Drug cases . Delaying will allow diminishing evidence in this multi-billion drug cases. Hope RW and MS knows what is going on in the country.

    kondaya77 Friday, 20 March 2015 11:38 PM

Arrest them without making prior a announcement. It should be the police who make such announcements not a crooked politician.

    Nelum Saturday, 21 March 2015 08:31 AM

Why say "we are sorry to say that we will have to arrest powerful people of the previous regime," ???Just arrest them.No one is above the law!

    dona Saturday, 21 March 2015 09:03 AM

Punishment should be given to all guilty people wether they are former VIPs or not. The law should be the same to the begger as well as to the president.

    slwala Saturday, 21 March 2015 09:08 AM

This way of extracting information from a criminal like Wele Sudda cannot be taken for granted if those allegations cannot be substantiated with concrete evidence. Hearsay statements have to be proven before they could do anything. If one is to read into the comment made John Amaratunge, it looks like they are paving some kind of a path to have former President involved in this case, so that he could be prevented from contesting in the up coming Parliamentary elections.

    Lima Saturday, 21 March 2015 09:25 AM
