Expressway to be patrolled by super cops

Traffic police manning the Southern Expressway are to whiz past in 2600cc engine capacity high speed Subaru Imprezza cars which can accelerate to 100 km/h within few seconds to catch traffic offenders.

A special police division to handle traffic on expressways set up by the Police Department is currently conducting trials in the Southern Expressway with Subaru cars imported recently. These cars are renowned for their high engine capacity and exceeding the 100 km/ph barrier within few seconds.

According to the police a new division was required since traffic regulations on the expressways are different from the normal traffic laws. Meanwhile, the expressway named as 'Gateway to Wonder' is to be opened for the public by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on November 27.

New regulations have already being drafted by police for the expressway. The new division of expressway traffic is administered by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) with powers vested similar to the Western Province Traffic DIG. (Supun Dias)

First you will have to teach them to drive, then maintain the
vehicles they use or you will find these super cops and their super vehicles in Elvitigala central garage most of the time.

    Great Job done .
i never dream t that we would have Highways.
With this government in power there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Its time to revamp the train service to international standards

    Nodrog Saturday, 12 November 2011 05:04 AM

David.....yes it is sad when people always condemn but this stems from frustration and helpless at whats going on in this country. Its the authorities who are responsible for us being in this plight so we are skeptical about anything they do.

Vijitha Jayasena Saturday, 12 November 2011 05:25 AM

Yes Fanam has well expplained. Any one who had driven on a gree way wouls realise this rules are different when overtaking, merging, and chaing lanes. Different rules are in place since motorist travel at a 100kmph + speed. Most SL need time to get used to this and must be educated or else 100s of people will lose lives just because on ignorant diver made a mistake.

Vijitha Jayasena Saturday, 12 November 2011 05:26 AM

Its not mazda my friend, its SUbara imprezza. Pls read carefully before comment and lets not be too critical.

    thilan Friday, 11 November 2011 11:29 PM

    Lightening Sunday, 13 November 2011 12:23 PM

    You mean, Lexus?

    walagamba Sunday, 13 November 2011 01:11 PM

David, I cannot agree with you more.

In my opinion this is a great step towards the development of the country and this highway was long overdue project.

I saw only the posts that criticize but none appreciating. Our people spend lots of energy on negative thinking that has no use for them, for country.

    Thomas Sunday, 13 November 2011 02:31 PM

Subaru 2600 CC IMPREZZA is no match for powerful Pajeros, Prado, Nissan Patrol, Jaguars, Benz, Lexus, etc. Why the so called super cops boast about their Subaru ??????????

    expat Sunday, 13 November 2011 03:01 PM

You are absolutely right David. At least people should learn to appreciate the good things irrespective of who did it.

    freehit Sunday, 13 November 2011 04:09 PM

In the absence of frequent braking, shifting gear, accelerating and less wear and tear, and less time taken, you'll be saving much more than the toll you pay, Manel.

    jimson Sunday, 13 November 2011 06:33 PM

this highway is good .government must teach the people how to use an highway .higway rules .

Not sure -- will there be any three wheel parks on road.

    Navin Monday, 14 November 2011 05:43 AM

Since when was 100 kmph a barrier?

    Kumardasan Monday, 14 November 2011 09:01 AM

To drive in high way you need experience. Here in Germany if you are applying driving license you have to learn also how to drive in High way. So we can´t do that now who has a driving license. But for new driving licenses apply we can add this training too. Who has the driving license now have to make a course how to drive fast high way this will help all of us to avoid accidents.

    M.V.R.Perera Friday, 11 November 2011 07:31 AM

why not have TV cameras instead of these very expensive cars and also avoid burning very expensive fuel and environmental pollution like in developed countries

    Daya Friday, 11 November 2011 02:06 AM

Who is going to monitor whether police officers are speeding in the same car when they are on off-duty.

    Don Friday, 11 November 2011 04:14 AM

Expressway is due to be opened for the public on 27th but still the new road rules are being drafted. When do police expect to complete so called different traffic regulations and how do police expect to educate the public within two weeks?I also do not understand how traffic regulations on expressway differs from other roads.

    citien1 Friday, 11 November 2011 04:40 AM

    They will.

Dilshan Silva Friday, 11 November 2011 04:42 AM

What type of vehicles are permitted on the Expressway?
Will 2600cc Subaru Imprezza cars will end up with VIP's sons or with VIP drug smugglers?
Do we need this sort of police vehicles for a100-mile Expressway?

    Lala Friday, 11 November 2011 04:58 AM

Why not Ferries, BMW, Benz will not be followed with these mazda's.

    don Friday, 11 November 2011 05:01 AM

does anyone know what is the allowed speed?? according to RDA its designed for 120kmph

    ishan Friday, 11 November 2011 05:04 AM

Use the Ford Falcon or Holden commodore 4000CC cars instead of Subaru. You can get more power and cheaper than the Subaru.

    willowsw Friday, 11 November 2011 05:04 AM

so now we can have drag racing in the super high way??

Dilshan Silva Friday, 11 November 2011 05:18 AM

    Good one

    igcas Friday, 11 November 2011 05:38 AM

Need for speed under ground 4 :)

    Fanam Friday, 11 November 2011 05:46 AM

for example that you will overtake other vehicles from the lane on your right and you will get back to your lane. the extreme right lane is only for overtaking. in drive in lanes, you need to maintain certain speed if not should move to the last lane. you cannot do these on normal single roads but are strict traffic rule on a highway. you will maintain your speed since there will be speed cameras and traffic in many places but on a normal road you will just watch if someone is flashing the head light from opposite side to tell you if there are cops/check point ahead.

Punchi Putha Friday, 11 November 2011 05:49 AM

Also there are limited entry-exit points. So offender can easily be cought at exit ponts with efficient communication by Police, rather than chasing them, which probably expose to more accidents in the expressway!. so why need these expensive cars!

    AMG Friday, 11 November 2011 05:58 AM

it's seems like getting ready for car race between Subaru and other cars.

Prof Wickramatillake Thursday, 10 November 2011 11:44 PM

    Hope they won't take bribes?

    Lightening Friday, 11 November 2011 09:14 AM

My 8 year old Falcon will out do any subaru out there. I'm more worried about badly trained police officers crashing into others. I think pile ups will be a common site on this new expressway.

    MJ Friday, 11 November 2011 10:21 AM

actually i hope they do ;)

    kaslana Friday, 11 November 2011 03:14 PM

Learn from Singapore or more advanced nations. Camera's as speed traps can do the job more effectively, fraction of the cost and mitigates risks on roadways to lives of cops and those law breakers pulled over for traffic offenses.

    Thomas Friday, 11 November 2011 03:49 PM

To catch a Thief / underworld using " A Pajiro / Prado / Nissan Patrol / or a Benz SL

    Manel Friday, 11 November 2011 04:01 PM

How many people can afford to use the express way with the toll charges and ever increasing petrol ale diesel prices?

    loku Friday, 11 November 2011 04:19 PM

Do any of you people ever make a responsible, helpful, non-sarcastic comment?

    meranchim Friday, 11 November 2011 04:29 PM

they will not demand any compensation from drivers[road user ] PAGAWA....I

    R.Dias Friday, 11 November 2011 04:52 PM

Do not be too sure of speeding for months or years.......all the light vehicles will travel on this for the thrill ...and to boast ...it is better to stick to the Old Galle Road......it will be much faster..
    ONLY IF ONE IS SENSIBLE......

    IGP Friday, 11 November 2011 04:52 PM

This law apply for the VIPs....?

    David Friday, 11 November 2011 05:11 PM

    So sad,...grown up guys.
    God bless mother Lanka.
    David

    Kurulla Friday, 11 November 2011 08:06 PM

    Take care when changing lanes.

    c.silva Friday, 11 November 2011 10:50 PM

Just today at 2.15pm a traffic cop with white belt across and all stood at the island on galle road near turn off to Mt.Lavinia hotel and waved a truck to cross without looking my way.A nasty accident was avoided,I scolded the cop and his reply: Well,I dont like to stand in the middle and wait for you motorists to" Mava yatakaran giyata passe mokadda kiyanne"? (what will motorists say after you run me over)
Please remove this traffic cop clown immediatly ! As for Subarus on the highway: Car speeds at 110,Subaru tries 120 great pile up involving 10 cars and death+injury !
Just fix speed cams, pix the licence plate and fine the owner hefty fines, instead of allowing green notes to pass!!

Gemunu de Silva Friday, 11 November 2011 10:56 PM

If the highway has only 2 lanes , the outer lane should be used for overtaking only. The outer lane should be the emergency lane & sometimes called the " Police lane" in some countries. High speed use by police should not be to chase cars travelling at high speeds. It should be for Police to arrive at a scene of crime faster. Any motorist travelling at high speeds or breaking the law ,should & would stop when they hear the police siren sound from behind. Unless of course they are doing a "getaway" from a serious crime. If a motorist breaks a motor traffic act law the Police should be able to stop him without engaging in a "High speed car chase" endangering the lives of other motorists & the police themselves. After all, are they going to train police drivers to be racing car drivers in the future ? Who will pay the cost of Insurance for them ? Is it the tax payer ?
