Dr.Harendra Dissa Bandara, a university academic has been appointed Acting Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with effect from April 2.

Dissa Bandara is the Professor of Finance at the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, was released to the SEC to run its Financial Services Academy.

Meanwhile, along with this appointment, the SEC also announced the appointment of Deputy Secretary to the Treasury S.R Attygalle and Dean Faculty of Law, Kotelawela Defence University Prathiba Mahanama as two new Commission Members.

How do we know that these appointments have been made based on their academic qualifications or career experience/skills proved on the respective fields? Or whether they are politically motivated appointments to hold these positions so that they can be used to manipulate the affairs to the requirements.

Dr.Harendra Dissa Bandara is one of best in Finance academic field in Sri Lanka. He also does not have enough research background and he did not publish any research papers in well reputed journals such as SSCI indexed. This appointment is also one appointment like before. He can earn good money in his stay in the CSE. Prathiba Mahanama does not have any research background at all speacially related to Capital Market

The Govt keeps on appointing people who may be good in their own fields of excellence but who know next to nothing about the Securities industry. That is why the industry is not going forward.
