The depression in the Bay of Bengal is heading towards the border of South India as of this afternoon, Department of Meteorology said.

It was located about 350 km to the North East of Jaffna and it is expected to move North West towards the Tamil Nadu coast.

However, a spokesman from the Department of Meteorology told Daily Mirror that the Northern, Eastern and the North Central Province will be affected by the depression.

Accordingly, windy conditions were expected to continue over the said areas and in the sea areas off the Northern and Eastern coasts. The sea area in this region was expected to be rough and dangerous at times.

Showers or thunder showers were expected to occur at times in the Northern, North-Central and Eastern provinces. Heavy rainfall (more than 100 mm) were expected in some places.

However, according to the Disaster Management Centre sluice gates of several reservoirs including Kotmale, Inginimitiya, Rajangane, Thabbowa, Deduru Oya, Lakshapana, Weheragala, Kala Oya, Narchchiduwa, Hangamuwa and Uda Walawe have been opened as the water levels were increasing.(Yohan Perera)
