Indicating that his party could support a motion in the House to ask President to dissolve Parliament and go for an election, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said over the weakened that Parliament could decide on having an election, the type of election and the time it should be held.

“Parties in Parliament will decide on the election. They will decide on the date of the election as well,” he said.

“They can also decide whether to hold the Presidential Election first or the General Election.

“Parliament can decide on the elections with a two thirds majority. However, the main issue is not an election, but to safeguard the rights of the people,” Mr Wickremesinghe said at a public rally in Kandy on Saturday.

“Election is not the main issue. The main issue is to safeguard people’s rights; to ensure that the Constitution of the country is followed.

“If a group does not have a majority they should resign. They cannot hold on to office like leaches. If they did not resign even after November, 29 when the next vote is taken in Parliament, we will have to take to the streets,” he added.(Yohan Perera and J A L Jayasinghe)

we deserve a credible alternative leader who can win. Party room meeting and secret ballot will decide the party leadership, then we will not have leaders who fails in opposition and fail in government for decades. Pathetic leadership are the problem and have no clue about the people they need to win back. Leaders who lose elections must go.People have thirst for change but as at now we don't have a lot of good options to vote for, we need a team of younger leaders to drive the nation forward.We have good reasons to be fed up with this old lot. We might not like the man but if not for his tactical and clever manoeuvering we would still be stuck in Rajapakse's reign of terror.We have short memories and tend to forget the horrible past where crooks were running the country to the ground. Unfortunately, Sirisena being a village idiot is not up to Ranil's standard to be able to work with him. Just imagine if we had a president like Late Mr Kadirgamar and Ranil as the PM we would have been the envy of South Asian nations.We need Ranil for a bit longer until these evil Rajapakses are banished from politics.
