Soon after the agreement to lease the Hambantota Port to a Chinese company, the government yesterday sought Cabinet approval for a 40-year lease of the Mattala International Airport to an Indian company.

The Cabinet paper was presented by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

An Indian company had made a bid to develop the airport which built under the previous regime with financial assistance from China.

The airport and the harbour are in close proximity to each other. (Kelum Bandara)

The Chinese and Indians must be really not very smart. Why would anyone want the operating rights to two white elephants ? No property rights. Could it be that they think that they are getting two of the best built, best located strategic transport and commercial hubs in the Indian Ocean?

In the future the ports , airports should not carry the name of the head of state or any politician. These are built with public money/borrowed money, so all Airports in Sri Lanka should be named accordingly, without a link to a political family.

Seriously? Who with a sane mind will want to lease that place? Surely not for an airport, maybe for aircraft scrapping, they are good at it.

Is this the new Temasek concept founded by Yahapalana forefathers ? Sell/Lease every asset, so future governments/generations has nothing to manage but just wait till lease agreement matures.

    gamini Friday, 11 August 2017 03:17 PM

without leasing it to some one where would the govt. find the money to repay the Chinese, as this project is ill conceived and brings no revenue

Why are the Sri Lankans uncomfortable over Indian company taking over?India has had much more cultural links with Sri Lanka and an Indian company taking over will bring in flights and more tourists from India. Also with India's greater comfort level with Western democracies, India will be able to promote the area better. It is a positive scenario for Sri Lanka
