The Cabinet has approved a proposal permitting the government to take over the Neville Fernando Hospital attached to the South Asia Institute of Technology and Management (SAITM), Highways and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella said today.

However, he said the government had decided to allow SAITM to function as a non-state medical college despite demands by student unions of state universities and the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) to nationalize it.

Minister Kiriella told Daily Mirror today that Dr. Neville Fernando was prepared to handover the hospital to be administered by the government and had not sought any compensation for doing so.

“The hospital property is valued at Rs.3.5 billion. Yet, Dr. Fernando is ready to hand it over without compensation. It will be administered by a board of management and its ownership broad-based,” he said adding that the government would abide by the Court of Appeal ruling and as such SAITM would be allowed to function as a private medical college.

Minister Kiriella and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne submitted the Cabinet memorandum. (Kelum Bandara)

" abide by the Court of Appeal ruling " - NOW IF ANY - Strike. Talk against, ALL who take part in demonstrations . Work to rule , - haul them to court and mete out justice - The justice -- as all of us are aware (for contempt of court) is JAIL ( eg SB's case). This should also apply to all who may act in sympathy with those found guilty of this offence.

what about BOC, Peoples Bank, Peoples Leasing, LTL, Peoples Insurance, Lanka Hospital Sri lanka Insurance. Immensely valuable assets of the country and profit making. Dont generalize entire govt sector due to several loss making entities.

    SUJ Wednesday, 28 June 2017 09:01 AM

Hospital is loss making, university is profit making. Hospital was built on a 99Yr lease land and BOC has given large Loan to build the hospital. If the Govt nationalize this assets we will inherit the debt also. That's the why he's willing to give up the hospital without receiving any compensation. By doing that he's hoping on keeping the ownership of the university.

All other countries' privatising state owned properties for better management but it is other way around in Sri Lanka to take more pain such as bloody GMOAs.Pass necessary laws to take necessary action to violators for smooth functioning of the hospitals.Government should take action for the better interest of the general public without give in to few politicised bastards.

No sympathy please. Where ever, GMOA /students have acted against the laws of thus country , -- punishment (including jail sentence) - even expelling them from the profession / universities is the need of the hour.
