A police sergeant attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been arrested by the officers of the Bribery and Corruption Commission while accepting Rs. 80,000 from a businessman in Sapugaskanda as a bribe.
Bribery Commission Director (Investigation), SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri, said the police officer allegedly solicited a bribe from the businessman to withdraw a court case. (DS)

Can dragging on court cases for various "flimsy" reasons (which look obvious to all) be also due to such reasons as well ? Eg. Thajudeen, Lasantha etc etc

If the accused is ready to pay a bribe of Rs.80,000/- to get the case withdrawn, we can assume that the offence is very serious, and the punishment may run to several millions or long imprisonment if he is convicted. Mmm.... what kind of crime could this be?
