882 abducted since 2009: Police

Since 2009 till November this year, 882 abductions have taken place according to a new report prepared by the police under the directions of Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakone.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that 875 cases have been solved after finding the abducted victims and 849 suspects were arrested in connection with the abductions.

The number includes personal issues as well. Most of them have been abducted for ransom according to information gathered by the police.

Police also stated that 247 abductions had taken place this year till November 22. Out of that 236 cases have been solved by the police by finding the abducted victims, SP Rohana said.

In 2009, 398 persons were abducted and 237 persons were abducted during the last year, the police said. He said that 328 cases were solved in 2009 and 211 cases were solved in 2010 after finding the abducted victims. (Supun Dias)

This sort of figures are very important for the public to know. When such figures are not known to the public, people get the impression that police is useless.

I would congradulate the IGP on such data which no doubt will increase the credibility of the police.

Despite above, I will severely condemn the police for not solving the high profile abductions, white van issues etc. These are much close to the heart of the public giving the impression of a law enforcement which bows down to political mafia. I would challenge the IGP to give such figures ( journalists etc) which certainly will give confidence to the public! We need to know if the police is catching only the sprats leaving the sharks alone!!!
