Prasanna Solangaarachchi, is contesting from the Kolonnawa electorate in the upcoming General Election. Following are excerpts of his interview with Dailymirror :

How influential was the late Bharatha Lakshman in your life?
He was my guru and he is the reason why I am here today. He was shot while we were in the process of making him the organizer of the Kolonnawa district.

Kolonnawa is a hotspot for drug deals and the underworld. Although there are many politicians in this electorate they haven’t done anything to eradicate this menace. Does this mean that you too are indirectly assisting them in their activities?
I have never got involved in these activities and will never get involved either. I work according to a different policy. I will never sell liquor or cigarettes, cut down trees, or run farms to find money.

Why did you want to support President Maithripala Sirisena during the Presidential election?
I had several reasons. One was that Bharatha’s murder was not served justice and I got quite frustrated about that. I strongly believe that people cannot kill people anywhere in this world. While moving towards the Miracle of Asia, if Bharatha and a group of people were slain in broad daylight what second thoughts about you and me? Also there was a Tamil and a Muslim who also got killed during the incident and that shows that this incident has given rise to an ethnic issue as well.

Your party membership was suspended. But are you still a SLFPer?
My membership was not suspended. I am an SLFPer. When I saw that unfair practices were taking place within the party I stepped out of it with the party’s General Secretary. Thereafter they formed the United National Front but I am not going there.

Whom will you support if a UNP government wins?
Until the results are released on August 18, I believe that we will win. After the results I still believe we will win. If we get majority votes we will decide who will be the PM but if they win they will appoint whom they want. But I will not support them.
