Is it illegal to own an elephant in Sri Lanka ? Elephants have been owned by private individuals and temples throughout history. If someone can afford an elephant and looks after it what is the problem ?

Why is it so desirable to keep these beautiful and sacred creatures in captivity? Sadly, the conditions in which they live is terrible! I cannot understand how a "holy" person would allow this. This is not holy, nor is it respectful of the creator whom these beloved creatures were created by. I believe the monks are the ones who should be chained up and made to live in their own excrement without proper care, love or treatment. SHAME ON YOU!!!

Do you like to give your children or parents to some other rich parties to be looked after inside a prison, so just think as simple as that.

Government should stop giving elephants to Temples or any other places. Elephants should live only in orphanages.

These majestic animals deserve their freedom...just like you enjoy your freedom.

This is the same argument that slave traders used some decades ago.

The Elephant Kraal head is now the Deputy Minister after all his great grand fathers political symbol. Yes Sir we have to look after our wild life animals.

It is not a matter of legality! These are herd animals and are very intelligent !They should not be separated from the mother at such a young age i.e. they suckle for at least 6 years as far as I know!It is as bad as taking a human baby away from the family! In short it is a crime !It is greed that make them do this as they are worth millions! This priest is quite famous for his sermons but I have lost any respect for him and another priest too who is responsible for a similar act! They should be ashamed of themselves and as a Buddhist I feel that they should be de robed! The famous Gangaramaya stole a female baby from her mother at age 4 !Disgusting!Herds mourn when babies are lost!Sometimes mothers are killed!Lord Buddha would never have approved what these so called priests are doing!I congratulate our new deputy minister for taking a stand on this!!!!
