Animal rights activists expressed concern over the manner in which stray dogs were being removed from Colombo to make the City presentable for next month’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

Animals Rights Activist and Animal Protection Trust Secretary Sharmini Ratnayake said that at a September 5 meeting attended by Colombo Municipality officials, several Veterinary surgeons, Western Provincial Council Officials and Animals Rights Groups, it was decided to relocate stray dogs in a humane manner. It was also decided to bring back the animals to their former habitats after the CHOGM was concluded.

“However, the officials have failed to keep any of the promises they gave us. We were assured that we will be informed prior to the dogs being taken away from their habitats but instead, the operation was started in an abrupt manner about two weeks ago without being told about,” she said.

Ms. Ratnayake said at the meeting we had been told that kennels would be built at the Dematagoda slaughter house which is presently not in use and that the animals would be properly fed.

“No kennels have been built at the slaughterhouse and the dogs have been dumped at the dog pound as usual where they are being traumatised and ill-fed,” she said. (Lakna Paranamanna)

Export the dogs to countries which eat dog meat.
We are daily killing millions of chickens, goats, cattle and fish for human consumption.
Hence this humane and profitable method should be welcomed.
Thiose who oppose will be hypocrites.

whatever said and done, dogs on roads are so unfortunate when it comes to terms of 'sympaty' on animals, as per budhism .these poor animals whenever in sight are stoned or broken of,their legs ,they starve by road sides to death.animal lovers in the counry through organisations, voice, in various ways, but to no avail.may the poor creatures attain nibbana in a country where people observe 'pansil' which is limited only to the temple .

Ms. Sharmini, animals are used to living with human should have to look after well. Stray dogs are not look after by any one even by your organisation. Let athorities to do a proper job to make things correct as these matters are becoming worsen day by day now. Ask them to set up proper registration process if any one love to keep any type of pet. That will give all type of animal better living condition.

Excellent move. Please remove all strays from the street and relocate them after having them sterilized. Beautifying the city and its suburbs is of no use, if the dogs are free to roam about on our streets.

    Imran Wednesday, 30 October 2013 02:50 AM

Ms Sharmini - If your group really love stray dogs why dont you pick all of them and look after them the way you deem fit. Stray dogs are a nuisance and a health risk. Our people should learn even to take care of registered pets in a responsible manner
