'Indian Summer' restaurant on Horton Place raided

10 January 2019 07:57 am - 32     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

The Operations Manager of a popular Indian restaurant-Indian Summer, in Horton Place, Colombo 7, was arrested yesterday for maintaining the restaurant in a deplorable manner and violating food and safety regulations, the Colombo Municipality’s Health Department said.

Cinnamon Gardens and Borella area Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Dr. Subash Mendis said expired, spoilt and rotten vegetables, fruits and meat were found abundantly at the restaurant which was operated by an Indian national.

“The hygiene levels in the kitchen were deplorable. We came across spoilt and expired food items including meat and vegetables which were stored unhygienically. The deep freezer was malfunctioning meaning that the meat was spoilt. On top of that, the employees had stored raw meat and cooked items such as bean and chickpeas in the freezer,” he told the Daily Mirror.

He said the kitchen workers had inserted polythene bags full of coals in the stove without even bothering to remove the cover. The stove was used to prepare tandoori chicken.

Dr. Mendis said the personal hygiene of the employees-both Sri Lankan and Indian nationals-were poor as they lacked knowledge of hygiene or food and safety regulations.

The Operations Manager of the eating outlet was arrested and produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate and was later released. The Magistrate had ordered the restaurant's management to rectify the mistakes by Friday (11). Health Department officials had been ordered to report back to the court on Monday (14) after inspecting the premises.

Dr. Mendis conducted the raid with the assistance of PHIs Vithanage, Subaratne and Food Inspector Wickremaratne under the guidance of Municipal Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

There are plenty of restaurants in Colombo where we can find rats but no one will ever bring this to light. They will publicise this kind of things only when the expected amount was not given. No any foreign living Sri Lankans will understand this.

There are a massive number of Sri Lankan restaurants that are worse, but they never get raided. Maybe Rasheed is correct.

for sure this is the work of the competition. I have been to this restaurant and they have been good standards. very, unfortunately, there is so much jealousy in business today.will take Dr to many restaurants far worse than what is been reported.

    Kram Thursday, 10 January 2019 02:28 PM

This restaurant has deplorable standards, the waiters can’t speak English or Sinhala, so it’s hard to communicate, I’m glad this was raided, it must be shut down immediately. It’s sad that some weird people are trying to defend the sub standard hygienic standards maintained by this terrible restaurant

    Jesus Thursday, 10 January 2019 03:16 PM

If the restaurant has bribed the officers they would have scot free. And if they check all the restraints for this so called standards.Karan will only have to eat his mama's food.

    TJ Thursday, 10 January 2019 03:29 PM

This is only the tip of the iceberg. Health officials should raid more restaurants

    naradha Thursday, 10 January 2019 04:14 PM

So now we know what high class Kolombians eat.

    sarath Thursday, 10 January 2019 05:11 PM

if this restaurants is to be shut down, then most of the eating places in Colombo will have to be shut down. these raids happen only when santhosam is refused.

    GH Thursday, 10 January 2019 06:30 PM

What a non-impartial justice system? if it were a local restaurant owner the sentence of the court would have been different, meaning PUNISHMENT maybe severe.

    NIHAL Thursday, 10 January 2019 07:57 PM

dickie bird Thursday, 10 January 2019 08:14 PM

Why are we condemning this raid and exposure instead of encouraging the Officials to check restaurants on a regular basis and DM to report.

    ME Friday, 11 January 2019 04:26 AM

Please keep up the good work! Food hygienic is absolutely important and customers never see the kitchens where their food is prepared.

    Jesus Friday, 11 January 2019 06:37 AM

Hygiene level at ministry of crabs is so sicker than this .They pay good amount for the Buddhist PHI officers

Orpheus Perera Friday, 11 January 2019 07:10 AM

There are so many Indian restaurants in USA, England and quite a few in Australia(where Chinese and Thai food is more popular). All the owners are Citizens of these countries. They may employ(Part time) few foreign students who has work permits. Indian nationals can own restaurants only in Sri Lanka? Only Sri Lankan Restaurant not owned by Sri Lankan born British in London was the "Ceylon Tea Center" and the Students Center canteen. They were under Sri Lankan High Commission. Still the London Westminster council forced the Student Center to close down(somewhere in late seventies) because they found a rat in the basement.

    Jacko Friday, 11 January 2019 04:17 PM

After a long slumber, the CMC has woken up! But why target one place? This is the usual story now in the city. This action smells bad.
