Influenza Virus: Declare state of emergency - GMOA

2017-04-17 20:03:12

The rapid spread of the influenza virus necessitates the declaration of a state of emergency but Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne has neglected it, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) said today.

GMOA Secretary Naveen De Zoysa told a news conference that the minister should consider this step on a priority basis instead of intervening in the SAITM issue.

He said the virus had reached epidemic proportions while the hospitals have run out of medicine.

“The minister should concentrate on this matter without occupying himself with other unwanted issues. There is a shortage of Tamiflu medicine to treat patients affected by the Influenza virus,” Dr. De Zoysa said.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Nalinda Herath said it was the government's responsibility to supply the necessary medicine to government hospitals.

“There is an attempt to register another foreign cigarette company. Without inviting other cigarette manufacturers the minister should import a sufficient stock of medicines to treat patients suffering from the influenza virus,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Herath said the GMOA has set up an emergency service at the Colombo National Hospital to treat those affected by the catastrophe at Meethotamulla. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

You all are talking against the GMOA and try to justify the nasty things that the government is doing. It is because of the jealousy and anger that your mind is filled with. Try to look at problems in clear perspective and think who is correct at those particular circumstances. The government is not doing any good thing to the society. Try to understand it without criticizing the GMOA all the time. Do you think unsuitable, unqualified doctors without proper clinical training would do a better job? You are making comments like ignorant people.

GMOA always appears to be creating trouble to the government, very difficult to find out when to trust them. Hope sanity prevails and both GMOA and the health ministry will work together to sort out all relevant issues.

Why have you suddenly develops a sympathy on patients now? You were the very people who launched strikes even in the pvt.hospitals, when Dengue and H1N1 were fast spreading in the last few weeks. You made hay when the sun shined. I guess now you take a turn to show public that you are very much concerned about people because you foresee your SAITM issue would not work as you wanted.

Good comment Alex. In the history the action of an attacker is to destroy villages ie. all crops, food and water resources, and set fire to dwellings.Motive behind is to annihilate the people they imagine as enemies. Eg. Uva / Wellassa disaster in 1818.Likewise when our doctors of GOMA say that they keep away from treating patients even in the private hospitals their idea is to prevent treating them who run for life for any salvation. The sole motive is to let patients to destroy themselves while keeping a clean hand and to achieve what they want..

The problem my friends is that the politicians are not educated enough to take any feasible decision towards the country. All the decisions they make are politically motivated. Look at the garbage problem. it took 30 lives and 145 houses before they opened their brains.

You doctors are against SAITM on a logical point you have raised. What is the logic you have, to accept Ayurvedic doctors, Homeopathy, Yunani , and such practitioners ?

Believe me I have come across doctors in Govt. hospitals and even in the private hospitals so called doctors visiting warded patients who cannot read and understand the bed ticket. Having the medical records in hand they used to ask the patient sometimes very foolish questions. GMOA is trying to white wash these people.

According to the new study, Tamiflu can reduce the duration of flu-like symptoms by about half a day. However, patients risked side effects. The researchers around Tom Jefferson of the Cochrane team did not find evidence that the funds prevent certain complications and hospital admissions

The flu has spread because of your very frequent strikes. So I suggest that go to your respective consultation clinics and honestly work for 8 hours instead of striking and doing private practice.

Very good recommendation and welcome proposal! The Government should immediately do so and as a first step SEIZE all properties and other assets of Doctors when they go on strike!! Under the Emergency the Government can declare the Health Care Services as Essential Services and violations should result in the drastic punishment!!
