Two police officers attached to the Dodangoda Police station were suspended after a video clip emerged showing them beating a motorcyclist mercilessly. The video footage went viral.

The two police officers were Sergeant Chandrajith Kapilasiri (59558) and Constable N Arunasiri (6108). The video allegedly shows them beating up a youth last Saturday, accusing him of turning of not stopping their motorcycle when ordered to do so by them.

The victim, whose identity was being kept confidential, was videoed while he was allegedly being beaten up in broad-daylight watched by a crowd of by-standers, one of whom videoed and uploaded the incident on social media. It went viral causing many to express their displeasure at the apparent heavy-handedness of the Sri Lanka Police.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, ASP Kapila Premadasa, who is in charge of the Kalutara area, said that he had immediately launched an investigation into the matter. “We investigated the incident soon after we witnessed this video. Statements were recorded from the parties involved and a statement was also taken from the victim.

Investigations revealed that the two officers had acted with excessive force and as a result we have suspended them from service with immediate effect,” he said.

However, when inquiries were made by DM the Police Media Division refused to elaborate on the incident.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Motorcyclists’ Association (CMA) issued a notice condemning the actions of the two police officials involved in the incident. Speaking on the matter CMA Secretary Chirantha Amarasinghe said that such heavy-handed tactics by the police should should be stopped immediately. He said nowadays motorcyclists already face enough harassment from the Traffic Police when they get on the road.

“We have complained to the Police Commission regarding the incident the occurred in Kalutara. Motorcyclists already face enough harassment at the hands of the Traffic Police. We don’t blame the whole Police Department. But due to the violent actions of a few officers the reputation of the whole department has taken a severe beating. We ask police head quarters and the Police DIG to take stern actions against officers who break the rules in this manner,” he said. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

This incident is the real testimony to the fact that we have a highly unprofessional Police force to enforce the law. The law enforcers are biggest violators of law.

Please listen , i am a silent observer of news and comments in websites . I am not in position to justify anything here but most of the comments are express here emotionally. Police work is not an easy job in a uncivilized society. when our people start to obeys the law and order and then our country become paradise. Don't react emotionally , medias please publish news with responsibility (publishing the names before the judgments) . Think how many valuable life lost in accidents? , how many people becomes disabled due to accidents? most of them are due to irresponsible driving. Police officers act also reflecting the community. Because all are from the community so we also part of the error and need to change.

maybe the motor cyclist deserved the beating he got.....on a given day seeing the manner of cyclist on the road more than 50% deserve it...but its not professional for the police to beat up cyclist because they may deserve it, if we want to become a civilized country. they should have arrest him, thats it.

Traffic police should develop them with some effective and efficient methods to control the traffic violation rather than modifying crooked way of controlling the motorist purposely discrediting their valuable service.

In my opinion, such attacks are due to inadequate training of the police. A six-month training is no longer enough for the demands of our time. In other countries, the basic training of a policeman takes 2 to 3 years. The prerequisite is an A-Level or equal qualification.

Marcellino Lewis Monday, 03 April 2017 09:44 AM

Should be terminated from services without any dues heavy penalty and public work as punishment should given

    DHA Monday, 03 April 2017 08:58 AM

    Sonali Monday, 03 April 2017 08:22 AM

Suspended means they are temporarily kept away from their duties. They should be arrested, brought before the law and if found guilty should face the consequences.

This happened in broad-daylight. Just imagine what kind of of disgusting torture goes on behind closed doors. This was constantly highlighted by the UN based and other NGOs but people just dismiss them as "Batahiria Kumanthrana".

    Bala Monday, 03 April 2017 07:28 AM

Yes the Police this time has exceeded their limits but frankly we must state that the m.cyclists are equally very bad and indisciplined. Even on Saturday at Buddhaloka Mw a m.cyclst came horning behnd me when I was walking on the pavement so that he could jump the traffic ahead of the traffic lights by going where pedestrians walk.

I think a Code of ethics should be published and the Rights of citizens including motorists should slow be published. If its too expensive a full page advertisements in the local newspapers in all 3 languages should be circulated. Its hightime these hiding behind trees and other obstacles to nab motorists by cops should be eliminated as well as other offences. Some policemen are criminals n thugs clothed in a legal uniform. lawful citizen via DM Android App

    Tissa Monday, 03 April 2017 06:31 AM

It is good that police have published the culprits names They should publish the name of the drugs dealers and robbers etcs via DM Android App
