A A A

The bidet showers fixed at the washrooms of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) have been removed from today and replaced with toilet tissues, a BIA official said.

The official said the decision was taken to maintain the cleanliness of the washrooms as they get damp due to the use of bidet hand showers and added that this was in accordance with the system prevailing in Singapore. (T. K. G. Kapila)

How to wash backside with tissues??Crazy management

    ANTON Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:38 PM

POINTLESS, SOME OF OUR PEOPLE DON'T USE BOTH.

    mjb Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:48 PM

This is not the good move. Please take the example from Dubai Airport where over million peoples in different cultures are using day by day. They allowed to usewater.

dinesh withanage Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:50 PM

what do we need to keep clean? commode or the anus

Citizen Perera Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:51 PM

Totally agree with Aquarius. The cleanliness and maintenance of the toilets is not a problem only at the BIA. It is a problem all over Sri Lanka in most places like our trains even the luxury trains, tourist attractions like the wildlife parks, Sigiriya and Pinnawela , the Cricket stadiums etc. Exhorbitant charges are levied at these places but the facilities provided are disgraceful. However the authorities do not seem to care despite complaints of the unbearable stench that prevails when toilets have been misused and remain uncleaned. It is necessary to appoint adequate staff to supervise and ensure the cleanliness of the toilets. Toilet facilities to cater for both locals and tourists should be provided.Maybe a new portfolio for a Cabinet Minister for Toilets and Personal Hygiene be created.

    Asrsr Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:53 PM

Simple , reduce the water pressure , it wont splash , and need more cleaners with better equipment not with an old broom . or change every thing like Singapore , food, customer service , customs and emigration with out bribe, we will welcome the change then

Swiss Boy Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:55 PM

First impressions last forever. Therefore, good move. However, many times, the cleaner in the toilet is the one who wets the floor. He will stand there waiting for someone to arrive, then wash the toilet in front of you, with the hope of receiving a tip. Therefore, removing the bidet shower may not fully solve the problem. Reasonable pay, good supervision and coaching the staff will also be required.

    cmb Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:55 PM

It is not called toilet tissues but toilet paper..

    gamaya Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:57 PM

I agree. As I said, BIA has wasted public money on creating a new problem rather than finding a solution. BIA is a huge transit hub for Malaysia, Indonesia and other Asian Subcontinent flights. Surely this will have an impact in future.

    gamaya Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:59 PM

Exactly. Compared to BIA they are getting millions of travelers per day or per hour. Still washrooms are amazing. The cleaners do a great job. The problem at BIA is incompetent cleaners, can't they handle a few thousand passengers?

    Anja Thursday, 23 June 2016 04:18 PM

Go to Pettah toilet realize how dirty country Sri lanka.Changing to tissue which will solve all the sanitary problem here via DM Android App

We pay a hefty airport tax - that should cover the toilets too.

    Mura Thursday, 23 June 2016 04:30 PM

Should have both options. I am a frequent traveller. Some times i have noted these cleaning guys separately hide these papers somewhere down and they give it to those who looks they will give something to them..This is near the face washing area in the toilets. These guys need to be trained first. Its not the users fault.

    Anuruddha Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:36 PM

Most people don't know ho to use a toilet. Often I have experienced people having showers in toilets. Ablution should be done elsewhere, this is the main problem.

    Perera Thursday, 23 June 2016 11:27 PM

Properly trained janitors and strict supervision should help keep the BIA toilets clean. Moreover the workers should be paid a proper salary to feel for the job they do. Most cleaning contractors charge a lot and pay paltry salaries to their staff.

Coconut Republic Friday, 24 June 2016 02:14 AM

Oh dear! This time the issues with tissues!!! Keep going guys.

A Disaster ! There is a saying "Sudda ge passa wage" Now even sri lankans will have the same. Washing the back is the best. Tissue culture is good for those who never wash the back. Sri Lankans and many wants that facility. Do you want more Arab tourists here ? Then you must have bide showers.

ranjith neg Friday, 24 June 2016 06:34 AM

My dear air port tax is included in ticket fare

    Yassar Friday, 24 June 2016 07:17 AM

Certain times when I enter the toilet I see urine all over the commode.. Which means people stand and urinate on the commode. So when I need to use I will have wash the commode seat before sitting to use it. One thing Ive noticed there is no drain inside the toilet the used water on the floor should be pulled with a viper to the drain which is outside the toilet. Wrongly planned drainage system. via DM Android App

    Fred Friday, 24 June 2016 08:43 AM

Post someone outside the toilets like they do in Singapore. His job should be to monitor the situation within to ensure cleanliness hygiene.Otherwise consider segregation of some sort. Should have both facilties water and tissue. It is an international airportLong term it is up to schools and parents to teach good habits

    Janitor Friday, 24 June 2016 08:51 AM

SERIOUSLY some airports in the Middle East also have squatting toilets and commodes to choose. between. Sitting on dirty commodes no one likes. Introduce here too to prevent floor being used.

    Sathees Friday, 24 June 2016 08:56 AM

Why not just add some paper rolls.Simple problems need simple solutions.

from dubai Thursday, 23 June 2016 09:57 AM

Very wrong move by BIA management. We Asians still use water to clean not tissues. Also BIA is not considering GCC, Malaysian, Indonesian tourists. Overall it gone back fire.

Only Asians? you must be a lin gembek .

    Naim Thursday, 23 June 2016 12:58 PM

Maintain the cleanliness of the Toilets? Not people? On what basis SL compares to Singapore? Is everything else is in accordance with Singapore? Only white guys are able to do a proper cleaning using tissues because they have the training from the childhood. Asians and Arabs don't do this. BIA may have to install Air Fresheners at all corners of the Airport. May be in side the flights also.

Gihan Perera Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:00 PM

Have both options please. There are people who cannot finish off the "thing" without using water due to health conditions.

    Bala Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:05 PM

Washing is one thing but splashing it around all over is another. I have found the BIA toilets so wet, you have to clean your shoes again when you come out.

    Shabir Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:09 PM

BIA had such terrible smelly toilets maintenance and since they could not fix it they introduced this tissue system. It is a shame we have such a bad experience when we arrive at the Airport. We want both option with Water and Tissues.

    Speechless Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:12 PM

    jehan Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:16 PM

Very good move, people use these bidet showers to wash foot not where it should be used specially female ones, making the entire floor is wet. purpose of visiting airport is travelling, if people can accommodate the same thing without water on board i dont see any reason of them being uncomfortable on ground

    Katie Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:21 PM

Agree a fee should be charged for the toilet use at BIA and the income be utilised to pay the sanitary workers . Removing the bidet showers is not the remedy. Like at the Sri Jayawardenapura hospital, there should be somebody to monitor. by monitoring a Charge on the person who messes the toilet and does not flush. And yes we asians use the bidet shower and not just toilet paper alone. Yack!

    yakadaya Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:37 PM

NO WATER ON BOARD!!!! which airline have you been flying with ?

    yakadaya Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:38 PM

The BIA toilets are pretty stinky anyway, taking away the Water spray bidets would only worsen the smelly situation inside BIA !!!

    Captain Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:43 PM

There are commodes that are in built with a water sprinkler. That would be the best option

Just Another Citizen Thursday, 23 June 2016 09:50 AM

South Asians lack basic toilet training and make a mess out of everything. We should be ashamed on the way we use things. This is down to parents and schools teaching the basics. Establishments also need to charge for toilet use, that way they can use that money for the maintenance.

    Sincere Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:00 PM

Please make sure that you have done your major and minor jobs before entering BIA, Its better for your health!

    Hotpepper Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:03 PM

People with body hair and people who hot food need water to wash

Abdul Wahid Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:09 PM

How come passengers misuse toilet facilities BIA only.?in this part of the world more water is used not only in toilets but in Ablutions also, but areas are well kept and dry all times.May be the cleaning methodology adopted in BIA is not professional ,

    Grace Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:09 PM

In that case for each toilet, After every use of each toilet, the attendant should check it because many people do no how to use toilet papers and may use the full roll or waste it.

    Kumara Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:15 PM

I have seen people washing washing their legs in the wash basins making the floors flooded with water.

    Gamaya Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:22 PM

Hey! Please do not criticize! this is the only development work this Yahapalanaya did after coming into power!!!

    gamaya Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:27 PM

If splashing water all over is a problem, its a maintenance issue and not an issue of those who is using it. Without finding a solution to the problem BIA has just wasted public money in creating a new one.

    Aquarius Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:34 PM

Unfortunately, BIA toilets are one of the worst. Please note it is not used by Sri Lankans alone and definitely not a pleasant place to be even for a few minutes. Water or paper is not going to make the place clean or hygienic, we need basic education on toilet usage and how to keep it clean. Changing our habits is the bigger challenge.

    Sanka Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:52 PM

This is the most important thing to do in the air port at this moment to compete with Singapore Changi air port. These decision makers are good for nothing.

    Ganga Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:59 PM

Good move, but there should be at least one toilet with water.. BIA toilets are so wet and messy.. Haven't seen any other country like this except in chennai airport. BIA need to change the cleaners and the way they clean it's not professional at all. Cleaners ask money from passengers in arrival they are sleeping without cleaning the toilets.

    asanka Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:03 PM

No. Sri Lanka is becoming like S'pore in terms of toilets.

    Leo Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:04 PM

We Sri Lankans cannot wipe we need to wash and wipe. The solution to keep the toilet dry will stink up the entire airport. via DM Android App

    shantha Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:06 PM

An international airport that will not take our national currency?

    RK Thursday, 23 June 2016 03:25 PM

All the Middle Eastern airports have bidet showers yet the toilets are very clean. Just because the cleaners cannot do a good job you are putting the burden on the toilet users. Even in the middle east there are passengers of all walks of life and in fact majority are labour crowd. Yet cleaners do a good job. The Asians are not used to tissue papers. Just imagine someone does number 2 and wipes with a tissue and sits next to you in the plane and smells s**t. would you like it??
