Over 500 GN divisions in 14 districts declared high-risk dengue zones



Colombo, June 23 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 538 Grama Niladhari (GN) divisions across 14 districts have been declared high-risk dengue zones as Sri Lanka steps up efforts to control the rapid spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

The Government Information Department announced that the identified areas will be subjected to intensified dengue prevention and control measures due to the heightened risk of transmission.

According to the assessment, the Western Province has been the worst affected, with a large number of high-risk GN divisions located in the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts.

In the Colombo District, high-risk GN divisions have been identified in several Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas, including the Colombo Municipal Council, Maharagama, Piliyandala, Homagama, Kaduwela, Boralesgamuwa, Dehiwala, Egoda Uyana, and Gothatuwa.

In the Gampaha District, high-risk GN divisions have been identified in Attanagalla, Seeduwa, Kelaniya, Ragama, Minuwangoda, Negombo, Biyagama, Wattala, Katana and Mahara.

Meanwhile, GN divisions in Bandaragama, Horana, Ingiriya, Matugama, Panadura, Wadduwa, Kalutara and Payagala in the Kalutara District have also been included in the high-risk list.

The assessment further identified high-risk GN divisions in the districts of Galle, Hambantota, Matara, Kandy, Matale, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Badulla and Batticaloa.

Health authorities urge the public to support dengue control efforts by eliminating mosquito breeding sites in and around their homes and workplaces, while allowing inspection teams to carry out control activities in the identified high-risk areas.
