All necessary steps are being taken to prevent a possible surge in COVID cases that could be experienced consequent to the protest campaign by a political party in Colombo yesterday, the Health Ministry said.

Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told a news briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau that the possible rise in cases due to the protest would only be seen after 10 to 15 days.

“We, as health authorities do not wait until damage occurs but take all remedial measures to avert the damage before it turns worse ” Dr. Herath highlighted.

“Likewise, we will do our part as Health authorities to prevent a spike in cases due to the protest,” he added.

However, he made the point clear that if COVID cases would not increase in the next 10 to 15 days as expected because of their efforts, it doesn’t mean that such protests do not lead to rise in cases.

"We neither give consent nor condone such moves by political parties or any other organisations to launch such protests when the country is at a crucial juncture in terms of the pandemic. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

According to PP media it was a total failure and very poor turnout. So nothing to worry. Just go test some people at economic centres , schools and bus station and railway station. You will find loads

    rajan Wednesday, 17 November 2021 06:38 PM

did you see the photos of the crowd. The turnout was high. Either your are having a bad eyesight or you are a govt supporter and running down the success of the protest

    sam Wednesday, 17 November 2021 06:16 PM

Very easy to show a rise in cases.

    A Wednesday, 17 November 2021 06:29 PM

    No crowd why worry

    Daulat Wednesday, 17 November 2021 10:22 PM

Lol dumb Sri Lankans... No spine to protest against what's happening...hats off to the people who took part in the protest...

    Selvakumar Wednesday, 17 November 2021 06:43 PM

It's last two years same story going on, but how will be control that's questions to everyone because health ministry always silent for many covid -19 case..!!!

    joshua Wednesday, 17 November 2021 07:20 PM

It is matter of playing with numbers as usual. So no issue in showing a high number and attribute it to the protest. We know the SLPP tricks. Despite the blockades the turnout was very good.

All the countries are recovering from Covid. Economies are recovering. School kids lost their education. So, its better to avoid crowded places. Otherwise country will shutdown again and that is going to be a disaster.

The Dehiwala vaccine centre is well organized , All health workers,PHI the Doctor incharge and the Airforce personnel are performing an excellent service, very polite , very compasionate towards the old and feeble.God bless them all.

    Kaudi Wednesday, 17 November 2021 08:25 PM

I agree with Dee Cause look at facts most increase in cases coming from non protest areas. And major vaccine used is really of no worth after few months as efficacy of vaccine goes to down to 30% after few months Moreover children are given pfizer which is a good move but adolescence period children could show dangerous side effects as they experience a lot of harmonal changes and also the development of antibodies in children are quite slow . No one could stop the fourth wave it's fact cause nothing can stop cause of economic depression...so below 18 and people who got vaccinated before 6 months are under danger and vaccination doesn't mean you're protected this people have to understand if they getting too long exposure they can get covid even vaccinated cause virus can multiply in nose also and masks social distancing not enough as virus can survive in dry air for 6 days and it can effect everyone

It's very nice to hear that the health authorities are keen to stop the infection because of the protests. Similarly please take the necessary steps where people are daily gathering to get their essentials such as gas, kerosene, food items, fuel and also the youths who are queuing up to get their passports to make a living.

    ram Wednesday, 17 November 2021 09:10 PM

we can expect anouncement of covid death toll increasing to 50 to 75 within next few days

    sam Wednesday, 17 November 2021 09:12 PM

Cases will rise due to the protest. Any rise is exempted when thousands line up to obtain gas, kerosene and food items. Similar with passport queue and for visas and certifications of documents.

    Queuemann Wednesday, 17 November 2021 09:47 PM

First test the people standing in gas, sugar, petrol, kerosene and other queues

Before that you must give us physical count of Convid-19 contacts instead of giving us fictitious figures. Last 14th you reported us 695 contacts whereas same day you reported Worldometers 1843 cases. What is this descrepancy? Results of President's Katina Pooja ceremony also should be explored. Health Ministry should not be a political authority. Unfortunately we don't have a Ceylon Civil service today!

    Raz Thursday, 18 November 2021 01:19 AM

It could have been much worse if the police didn’t stop the people from coming to Colombo . Even then it was a big crowd !!

    Ram Thursday, 18 November 2021 01:37 AM

Some public servants have become lapdogs of the governing types and issue statements to protect their positions and future promotions. By right they too should come out protesting unless they are blind

Demuni Uduwara Thursday, 18 November 2021 04:27 AM

Dr. Herath, where were you when President attended Katina Pooja ceremony held?

    Gb Thursday, 18 November 2021 05:56 AM

Theyr going to use this to start a lockdown and breed hate towards opposition this gov is desperate

    Sambo Thursday, 18 November 2021 08:07 AM

What a silly statement by the ministry of health. They should know by now there is a rise world wide and here you trying to blame in in politics. Looking at the health minister we could understand this.

    Ranaweera Thursday, 18 November 2021 08:41 AM

This is a very misleading statement, no step can reduce infections if people behave in a irresponsible manner . Look at UK. More infections on daily basis. More deaths. Sajith is responsible for the 3rd and 4th wave. People should realize that we have lost significant portion of our income due to covid 19 and we have high debt situation. SJB cannot bring back that income as the recovery will take its time. While we should fight corruption we should support good work.

    Terrence Thursday, 18 November 2021 08:48 AM

Searching for scapegoats to pass the blame whilst the government rulers and their lackeys are basking in the sun flouting all health regulations

    Anthony. R Thursday, 18 November 2021 01:12 PM

Wow! What a assessment, Dr Herath should be nominated for a Noble prize for predictions, my foot. What a shame to be a lapdog of the Government his Profession and Position to the Bin, just another Stooge, Dr why not have a look at ques and gathering to get essentials.also you want school children to attend school.

    N SENA Thursday, 18 November 2021 01:43 PM

THE GOVT ONLY ORGANISED ROAD BLOCKS SO THAT PEOPLE CANNOT COME FOR THE RALLY. WHAT THE GOVT SHOULD HAVE DONE WAS TO HAVE A DISCUSSION WITH THE ORGANISERS TO SEE THAT THEY ADHERE TO HEALTH GUIDELINES. BY WHAT THE POLICE ACTION THERE WERE MORE CROWDS GATHERING AT CHECK POINTS

    Somapala Thursday, 18 November 2021 05:05 PM

Feel very sad to see this doctor has become another boot licker.

    Upulpb Thursday, 18 November 2021 06:21 PM
